Good head torch at night and a short hefty stick, whittled and shaped shaped to your liking.
Great way to have fun after legal shooting light on the river flats during a roar trip, they come out and nibble on the grass seeds and whatever else is tasty. Keep the torch on their eyes and they sit still, sneak in without spooking them and then run em down. Got 26 that way in the Okuru river last year was the young fellas idea, 11 year old lad on his first roar bored with all the rain started carving up a possum whispering stick by the fire. We all chuckled and left him to it until his old man took him out with the torch and he nailed 3 in 20 minutes on the first attempt, then everyone wanted to have a crack!

funny about the eels being protected...the shorts just shown on TV have trout whipped out of water via handline..... the plot thickens

actually you can.....shooting bow by instinct may be a nearly forgotton art but a close range possum wouldnt be all that hard....as others have said...whackem on head with stick,creep up n grab tail...some of us have caught many that way...used to get em out of bedding holes reasonably easy too.

If no stick is available grab him by the tail……just don’t stop swinging would make great tv

you dont need to keep swinging...that old wives tale is hairier than the possums,if they start to jink a wee flick and they cant come up,let front feet touch ground and the ystop trying to get back up.....

one would have thought the ins and outs of where they are and legality of what they do has been covered - if it is DOC administered public land National Park Conservation Area then yes eels are protected -trout license would be required - same as any National Park etc no natural feature can be harmed - dead wood only no live trees scrubs can be cut etc - but what is the land tenure where they are thats the question - private land of course eels could be taken -if it was a genuine survival situation some of the rules could be bi-passed to live - but this is not its a TV program

trout cannot be legally taken on handline....rod and running line is specifically stated in regs...so no long bamboo pole with short line etc either.

I've been watching this YouTube series https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=K7MJrFUFDWY now these were bloody tough blokes, in true survival situations. The blokes who survived must have had huge mental fortitude, not to mention being really innovative and physically tough. I find reality tv to be spew material and refuse to watch any of it.

yeah I reckon as an introduced fish any method should be legal like shooting sparrows or mynas

we need a raspberry blowing emoji for comments like that..but then again,it could be expanded on..afterall my ancestors got rather good at cooking long pig..that would make interesting TV viewing

One assumes because it has already been mentioned eels are not allowed to be caught and must be released that they're in a national park...
