Shot a nice mature red stag recently, just wondering if anyone educated in aging can hazard a guess at this blokes age.

the pedicles (wide bit at start of antlers) should be close to skull on an older animal...up to 2" high on a youngun
the way the hair curls on head and general shape are also indicaters
lentle n saxtons book has picture of the teeth in there too.
Cant find it but here is another.

This would suggest that deer was in the 9 to 12 year old range but this is quite subjective depending on feed quality/abundance and resulting tooth wear.
I'm going 6+ with the height and width of those teeth.

Send half the jaw to Alan Jackson in Taupo , he will cut a tooth and tell you exactly how old he was. Cheers Martin
Coronets you mean, pedicle is the bone that attaches to the antler. A little bit of pedicle falls off with the antler each time they cast bringing the coronets closer to the skull (as you're obviously aware). this blokes coronets were almost sitting on the skull.
He's getting to that magic time where there's so little pedicle left and the coronets are so low they almost appear to be slipping off the skull.
He's got all the characteristics of an old deer and I am aware that there are too many variables to call age accurately based on tooth wear. I was just interested to hear people's opinions on what they'd ballpark him at.
ah well you knows what IM on about then lol. he old enough to be shooting and youve got your trophy now...good on ya....just hope your teeth are up to the eating of all that steak.
