theres a t3 in .270 in the for sale section, .270 will be fine as well just like most of the 6/7/.30 calibres
Haha, weatherby vanguards are howas with another name on them, bugger all wrong with a howa, they are very well built on a good design. Of the cheaper rifles they are right up there with the tikka although a bit heavier. Nothing wrong with marlin either.

yea Ive had a weatherby & Howa - I also own a marlin & Remington & tikka. out of these makes if I was to go for a cheap rifle id go marlin, then Remington but Im real happy with the Tikka - I had nothing but dramas with the weatherby out of the box and ended up getting rid of it and dropping about $500 in the process. The howa was a .233 suppressed and nothing flash nailed a few fellow down south & a ok rifle, I guess all experiences are different eh? .
If I was recommending a rifle to anyone new to hunting I would still point them towards a Tikka or Remington. ...............hey but that's my 5c .... up to the buyer to ask the questions and do the home work . good luck fella ?

Howas are wetherbys and in my opion slightly better as they have a slightly nicer stock thats piller bedded. I hate the hump back piece of shit stock on the weatherbys. All the rifles mentioned here are so close in performance and features its ridiculous have a look at them first hand and pick one you wont go wrong. Go hunting.
308 Tikka T3 + Burris Fullfield II 3x9x40 use tikka rings that come with rifle buy some ammo go do some shootin, ideal starting point, upgrade scope & rings when funds available
Cheers Happy - as most have said above - there's not a lot between rifles these days - the moneys best spent on the OPTICs - first light and last light is when it matters good glass is where it really pays off .
Go to hunting and fining and see if they will do the deal they had going a while ago.
It was a Tikka with Optilock rings (a lot better than the ones it comes with) a Burris E1 3-9x40, sling and a case for $1,500
Alternatively there is the deal at Dead Eye Dicks.
Off the top of my head it is a Sightron 1 3-9x40 with bag slight rings etc. Its off trademe now at the moment, but think the auction has just finished.
The Ranger scope offered from GC is a piece of chinese crap that they have made for them. Go with either other package in whatever caliber suits you. Anything from .223 up will kill deer.
Because I like them better - trigger, action, safety, feel etc.
Plus they're generally a bit cheaper, I see no reason to pay more for a rifle that doesn't do anything better just because its fashionable. :)
My advice is to handle a bunch of different options and get the one that you like the feel of best, simple as that.

I own a Weatherby Vanguard and can vouch for the stock being an ugly lump of heavy remoulded plastic but it shoots better than I do.
As others have said, get something with an action you like and spend at least as much as your rifle budget on your optics.
Thanks Spud - think that's next on the list. Just suppressed it and fark it's good now
My advice for a half decent budget scope is not a weaver classic, bad experiences myself.
A loopy vx1 or 2 or burris would a good place to start.
If you do go for the t3 in 308 you may want to consider a limbsaver or other quality recoil pad.
While not objectionable to me the light weight and lack of any sort of recoil pad makes the t3 "brisk" in 308.
If its your first center fire it would be worth lookin at.
Others may tell you to cut the barrel in half and fit a suppressor.
I won't.;)
My T3 is deadly accurate. Shoots stuff dead

People run them down as cheap plastic ra ra but in my experience they function extremely well. I've had a lot of sako's and other high end rifles. The beauty of this is it just takes punishment and keeps on going. Easy maintenance. With a good load wickedly accurate. It's all I use these days. 7mm08. Shot game from 30 paces to 560 yds with it.

If I was you Rodsta spend the extra money. Sako Optilock rings and a decent scope.
Ive owned and sold T3's in 308 & 7mm RM, both shot well but I hated em as a bush gun, Those friggen plastic stocks are horrible when ya hands are wet'n'muddy. I dropped that 308 untold times.
And now I just brought another T3 ( well its a custom jobbie ) but still a T3 action and yes it has one of those lovely plastic stocks, but its a Varmint rifle so I'll live with it and it ( like most Tikkas ) shoots mint, so I do have a little love/hate relationship with T3's lol :D
Ive also had a Weatherby Vangard in 243 ( shot ok but was bloody heavy ) & a Marlin XS7 in 308 ( was a great cheap bush hack ) and their "acutrigger" system worked well for a bush rifle.
Its a good time good to buy a rifle at the mo as there's half a dozen or so good rifles in that 1200 price range, just find one that fits ya & put a semi decent scope & rings and your'e away
I forgot to add its had a limb saver fitted . 7mmsaum did a glass bedding job and lightened the trigger too . With the load he worked up
It shoots under 1/2 moa.
Just seen the latest hunting and fishing deal. Howa lightweight with nikko sterling diamond scope for 999 $ this is great buying. While the scope isnt top of the range it is a good solid scope and the best line that the company makes and will do you for a couple years till you can get someone me better optics. I kniw a huntjng guide that used a diamond on his rifle for years and it never let uim down.
Thats what i bought 6 weeks ago in 7-08, swapped the scope on my Stevens 200, a leupold VX2 3-9 X 40, DPT can on the end, felt great when i played with a few different rifles in the store, went in to buy a T3, left with the Howa.....
great for the bush, light as fuck, 20" barrel, hinge floor plate (no mag dramas) nice 'grippy' rubber stock, but does move at the fore end (eh VC) but still free floats, shit hot 2 stage safety.....
NOT slagging the T3 off, just preferred the feel and especially the price, as im a cheapskate and not a rifle snob.....the deer wont know its been hit from a cheaper rifle!!!!!!! as so many others have said!!!!!!
i think after all this advice back and forward hes going to be confused, go to different places, find a gun that fits nice, in either .270 .308 or 7mm08, middle of the range scope and rings, get out there and fill the freezer, if you cant get a decent rifle to suit between 1200-1800 for the average jo blo then theres something wrong. i think i only paid 1500 for my first set up in 308, and it makes animals dead, and its either dead or its not, get out and hunt
Hey rodsta i have a tikka t3 in 308 i got it mid year in the hunting and fishing special deal. I got the 308 with burris e1 fullfield scope 3x9 40 a sling and bag and normal tikka rings (they told me the optilocks had run out) . I have only shot 20 or so rounds through it and have not shot an animal with it yet but it does shoot very accurate at the distances i have shot some targets at 100- 200m etc...
You'd be better with this deal at hunting and fishing.

And rodsta if you do go that way I will have some optilock rings/bases for cheap soonish.
SCope is sweet currently have one on a 243 and one on a .17hmr plus a higher grade Burris on a wsm
They have a lifetime warranty too which is reassuring
I must be a bit of a funny Bugger , but I value the sighting equipment (optics and mounts ) probably higher than the rifle brand and to a point the calibre of the rifle .
Cheap scopes and mounts will sooner or later cost you animals .
I would choose any day a second hand rifle with good quality glass and mounts that averages 1 - 2 inches at a 100 yrds over a flash new sub 1 inch gun with Hong Kong Phooey optics attached to the rifle with Tin Foil mounts .
If your just starting out and have a really small budget then use whatever you can afford . It's better to be out there with cheap shit gear than at home on the couch talking about it .
But if you have enough money to be contemplating buying a brand new Tikka then my personal view is use a heap of that budget on your scope and rings .
Rifles come and go , but my quality scopes hardly ever get sold with the rifle , they are the part that I consider important , and the part I want to keep .

Hong Kong Phooey is the mantis!!!

Once for each scope. That's twice for me.
