No problem getting them to location call (heehaw) and single call on doc land, 162 A-Max to the noggin at 4yrds has been the closest this roar and 910yrds has been the longest shot.
Interesting change from last year is their coat colour, very dark base coat with a frosting of very red outer hairs. Almost their winter coat.
One things for sure, the buggers are accumulating cunning, as if they diddnt have enough already ! And difficult to find them this year in the open country.
A bush tactic that works is to hunt in pairs, one stays back and single calls as the other sneaks in as low to the ground as you can get, slow as possible, moving when either human or deer roars conceal your movement, and if new to hunting Sika then shoot the first stag you see as the pr_cks wont give you another chance.
I used to try and get past the satellite stags but that just ensured I shot nothing, they always know im there, now I take em home, meat hunting's my motive there.
Selective trophy hunting in some of the areas Ross and I hunt is better in late May through to September 20th, when you can evaluate through the binos in more open country as they feed up for/during winter, perfect excuse to get in behind the Long Range rifles again.
I picked up a pair of Dragons Claw gloves and a Mountaingear Chillwave Parka to keep the cold out when glassing the frosty months, with a couple more retrieve tracks cut this winter The long Range rifles might not get put away at all next year.
Beavis, keep the breeze in your favour and perservere, hunt with a mate thats passionate about Sika, you will get the better of them !
