    Arapawa ram question

    Hey team,

Quick question, it's been on the bucket list for a while, and I thought I'd do some research.

Is there a healthy population of them on doc land? Even available? I hopeful for some on doc land. I don't want to pay to shoot one on private land.

    Cheers Bevan

Call doc offices about them. They're not very common and no one is going to tell you shit as every man and his dog will thrash the place if publicly mentioned

I looked on the doc website a while ago not much info most seem to be on private land. Make it a bucket list trip and go to the Chatham Islands or Pitt island make a trip of it.

Hmm I may need to look into that, will just need to convince the wife. I'm in no rush to get one, just think about it every now and again

There is a slightly crazy person that raises them on private land on the west coast. Apparently this person was dismayed to discover that these beloved pet sheep were ending up on people's walls instead of living our their days as pets...

My brother has some down South Otago way on his property. He's very careful to make sure they are not in the roadside paddocks in case some over enthusiastic 'hunters' come and grab a trophy or two in the middle of the night.

I could transport one from private land to next to DoC land if you want, we have Arapawa sheep on private land and we have a block backing onto DoC land...you chase it through the fence and shoot it

I had one at pit road..... he now at "the shearers quarters" cafe...getting fed sheep nuts by the tourists.... great hardy sheep, low maintainence with bonus they taste good. they are smaller bodied than most other breeds of sheep.
a lot of safari farms offer them as a bonus animal...couple of hundy $$$$ and you get something different to the norm.

Hunting then on the island is a no go at the moment
You shouldn't be able to get permission from DoC or any of the land holders

Arapawa Island sheep dont have splotches either, occasional with nose or tail tip.
Pitts are all black finer sheep
Chathams are heavier than both and white
