    Baiting Wild Pigs

    Hi,

    Another newbie question please;

    Got a couple of dogs (blue heelers), but have zero experience pig hunting with dogs; I'm not sure I could keep up with buggers in the bush (heard some sketchy reports about GPS collar range/reception) and I certainly don't want to see them hurt (or perish the though, have to dispatch them in the event they get gored), so I was thinking about going down the the bait and wait road instead.

    Found a tonne of Yankee videos on YouTube (crikey, there's one where a hunter headshots 3 pigs with 1 round using bait - grain?) and it seems to be the preferred method of pig hunting over there. Did a bit more scratching around and it seems like the best bait is fermented maize (corn)?

    I'd been very keen to hear from any of you folks that have hunted pigs using this method, and what your most effective bait brew is please.

    I guess the best approach is to find a spot with plenty of pig sign, lay some bait out and scope a good overlook position, and return at a later time to lay more bait and hole up and wait for them to return?

    TIA for any advice or tips you're willing to share.

    Damn, just saw johnino's post regarding this topic;

    Goats are good bait if u can shoot a couple, dead sheep if u know a farmer that doesn’t mind giving u the odd dead one.

    Talk to your local supermarket. I used to get their dated/mouldy blocks of cheese (be a tidy kiwi and take the wrappers home to dispose of!) and just throw them around your likely spot.

    Worked for me!

    Think shooting position, discretion from other hunters, and ease of recovery when identifying your baiting spot

    And be prepared for a loooong night. And park your truck well away

    Depends what the pigs are eating, Sometimes they'll be all over meat, other times not so fussed.
    I chuck all the possum carcasses off the traps that dog doesn't eat around the fenceline. Pigs turn up.

    Fermenting corn? Don't feed it to the pigs, chuck it in the still!

    Don't tell me where you are throwing dated moldy cheese, I would probably get shot by mistake as I scavenged for it.

    I admit not all cheese went to the pigs.....

    Some judicious trimming achieved some tasty treats for us humans too lol

    Go to your local bakery with an empty 20 litre bucket and ask them to fill it with bread yeast mix..........make sure you take a second bucket with you as it will double in size as it rises.....
    ( dont ask me how I know to take a second bucket- does anyone know how to get yeast out of carpet btw)

    My local bakery charged me $10.
    Just throw handfuls on the ground and it will attract pigs like 'rotten meat does to blowflies'.

    Wont work as well if it gets rained on...

    We haven’t seen much success with maize (fermented corn) in our pig trap. They do like dead cows,calves,goats etc but won’t normally get into them till they rot abit unless you open them up with a knife. A decent game cam on your bait would be well worth it this is off the game cam from the other night

    Some of the locals are happy to come out in daylight for a munch on sheep carcasses etc

    Blood & Bone in between rocks or up and around a ponga will keep them busy for a while.

    Nah mate...the lazy ones use this shit ...TANNERITE.....look that one up,saw it used in Texas,Austin to be exact.A mate of mine whom I work with has a hog issue,not much of a hunter and uses this stuff as a “quick-fix”........plenty of videos of “hogs & tannerite”,certainly not my style,but when your overrun with pigs,its actually a quick fix.

    TANNERITE is commonly sold in many states,you have to mix the ingredients........I have used it several times when shooting,its a short lived thrill type experience

    Apples mate Apples

    Most orchards will let you pick them up off the ground, can fill a few fish bins pretty quick.

    They work great in the pig trap so can't see why they wouldn't work in your situation also.
