hi what do you guys and girls think the best leaver action and calibar gun to use for pig hunting cheers
Rossi 44mag done:)
BOOM
Never used a 44 , but a 30/30 is worth looking at ,Open sights still smack a deer or pig out to 150 .
44 mag I shot 354 pigs in 7 months with win 94, 10 in mag 1 up the spout for those big mobs.
Marlin 3030 was mine - a handy little shooter. I'm sad I sold it.
Mate runs a rossi single shot in 357mag cut down to i would guess probably not legal and uses mag and 38 special. 38s very quiet but not much knock down.
Can run 44 special in 44mag?

Head shot two 100lb'ers on Saturday (215 & 235 meters) zero wastage and no chews!
hi cheers guys so what would be the best if i carnt get a gun suppressed cheers
.44mag or .410 shotty with slugs?
If you cant suppress(tho can't see why other than funds ) 44 mag with specials or 357mag with 38 specials. But then its pretty much a bail gun only. But you can always have some magnum in ya pocket .

Ruger m77/44 they are a great little gun to use knocked a few pigs over with one now
quentin
What sort of country do you hunt, and do you hunt pine permits, most only allow a shotgun, so a break open cut down 410 that slips into a pack would be the ticket, keep it legal
I have a cut down 12g nice and light that i should start using again, sick of the heavy 30-30 i cant wear it on my back in any of the shit i hunt it gets hooked up on everything, even when in hand, i should get a 410 but cant justify having a 3rd pig gun
410( i think you can fire a 45 colt from it, ask an expert first though ), or a 357 would be my pick
12g shotty, slugs for the bail up and buckshot when waiting on the crossing tracks. When it's broken you always know it's safe. Also liked the 3o3 Jungle carbine, small and you could lock the bolt on an empty chamber, handy when getting thru the tight stuff.
I took about 200mm off it, it is still well over 900mm, just enough to sit under my shoulder and not hook up on stuff
I have only shot 3 pigs ever, the svord does the bulk of the work, did blow a good jaw up shooting one from above into the base of its neck, so went to shop and asked for most gutless slugs they had, so for me its a backup gun not a bail gun
Pig in tomo= loud haha
44mag fits in the .410 nicely, the rossi lever actions i have seen break stocks where they attach to the action as they are pretty thin in this area.
I guess it really depends on how you pig hunt and the terrain/environment you are going to hunt in. If you are strictly using it as a backup for the odd time you cannot use your knife then a 16" Rossi Puma in either .357 or .44 mag, or a single shot in either cal or in .410 with barrel chopped would be ideal. 45South's idea of a Ruger 77/44 is another good option.
But...
If you want some more range just in case the odd deer is seen, you hunt in open country or you just want some more versatility a Marlin in 30-30 would be the stock standard answer, or any carbine style bolt action in something like a .308, etc. this will give you far more range for taking down animals. If you have the money a Browning BLR would be another choice, still gives you the lever action but in modern calibres. Always one or two on TM.
hey what would a 410 be like on the dogs ears cheers
44mag down a 410 can fuck the barrel, got a big bulge in one from that. There are some single barrel 410's going pretty cheep (around the 200 mark) which wouldn't break the bank if you were to cut them down.

does anyone on here use a 410 as a pig gun cheers
I had a .45colt/410 survivor rifle.
Would shoot both rounds but 410 shot was rubbish pattern- about 1m at 10m, was all good with the .45 colt pistol rounds though just a nice little pop, dog didn't mind at all.
I'd imagine a .45 would chamber alright in a 410 shoty just dont know how the solid slug would react with the choke? bearing in mind a 410 slug is kinda shaped like a thimble and has ability to flex.
Steve doesn't seem to have a problem.

Ha ha ha ha. Telling a pig to sit with a big fuck off revolver in your hand
Steve has shot more pigs than probably Rushy's total number of posts on this forum, he's done it with all sorts of weapons, I think his favourite is an SKS???
Mind you pig hunting in Aussie can be a little bit different than in NZ.
Check out his website and other videos, some are funny as.
He would be Australia's most worked up Pro-Gun lobbyist this side of the black stump. If the Aussie gun registry say you can't do it, he will find a legal way of doing it where most people would just give up.
hi are 410 just as good for pig hunting as a 44 mag cheers
In the southern US they have a novel way of turning shot shells into slugs. Just look up" cut shells" on youtube. It's a good way to save money and to be prepared for anything.
Ahhh, we call them whistlers down here...
I've only tried them once or twice through my old shortened sxs, to scared of what they may do to my decent shotgun
Unless you're stupidly poor and NEED to shoot something with a slug right now there's really no reason to do that, just buy some actual slugs which will shoot better and perform better
That's funny as heck!!,if you don't find that funny you can't have a funny bone
In my opinion, and it's only my opinion, you are pretty much asking if oranges are as good as apples. You will have people that like oranges and you will have people that like apples, while both will satisfy the intended purpose they are two completely different fruits.Quote:

You need to give a little more information on your intended pig hunting technique before an objectionable answer can be given.
hunting with dogs that you intend on shooting the pig in the bail and depending on how close you are happy with getting to the pig, as well as the terrain you mostly hunt in will assist in a well informed answer, until that information is gained people will just be guessing in how you hunt and what your needs are.
Pointing a pistol at a clearly tame pig in someones paddock is mildly amusing but that guy makes really shit music and has terrible videos in general.
