Blue mountain & Four Peaks Range Access?

Question for south Canterbury folks - has anyone managed to get access to Blue mountain & Four Peaks Range conservation blocks without having to pay the Blue Mountain Station access fee? On the Access maps it looks like there is a paper road all the way around the south boundary of the doc land. Probably the usual hassle of it not following and logical landform on the ground. Checked with the local DoC office and got the following response.

Yes the Legal line of Mowbray road does run to the public conservation area. It is not formed all the way though and is fenced at the end of the formed track. From the fence it passes through Four Peaks Station for a short distance.
Dogs are permitted on the Conservation land if under control. It is difficult to get there though without crossing private land.

Bit of a bugger to have to pay a couple of hundred to cross what looked like on paper maybe a few meters of private land. Be good to know if anyone else has got in successfully before I do a trip down to scout it out.

I have always parked at the locked gates where 4 peaks starts and walked the fenceline down to the creek then up the creek to where the public land starts. I have met the farmer who owns the land where the park is on my way out a few times and hes always been happy with what i was doing. I havent been to that block for a good year or so that may have changed since then.

Discuss access with the local council. It is illegal to fence across a legal road, weather formed or unformed

Are you a rate payer sir, no. Well in that case can't help you, goodbye. That's my experience with council's. Personally just ring mr Brown and introduce yourself.

Never had that from a council. Generally a ph call to ask who the manager of the roading dept is, followed by a letter bringing the illegal activity to their attention and asking that it be rectified.
