BUSH HUNTING TIPS "Cure for bush nettle"

Here is one of the best tips I know of. Pictured below is "Ongaonga", also known as stinging nettle. Any hunter who has spent time in the bush, or been into cold gullies would have been stung at some stage. It can have quite an effect on some people. Its not the stings that bites, its the aftermath that carries on for a few days leaving a pins and needles sensation.


In the latter photos is "Pikipiko", young shoots on fern. You will often find there two plants growing in the same areas. Pick the pikopiko and crush it in your hands. Apply it vigorously over the infected area and make sure you get a reasonable amount on. Within a couple of minutes the pain will fade and you will not notice it again.

A substitute for pikopiko is using the shoots at the base of the fern plant. Ensure you get plenty of sap on the effected area. Again, it will not take long for relief to set in.

Once you have been stung by this plant, you have up to 30 minutes to cure it with the fern. The sooner you apply the fern, the lessor the ongaonga/nettle will have effect.

I have used this a number of times, its bloody GOLD! You will be thanking me the next time a branch knocks you to the face.

I kinda like the stingy sensation, doesn't hurt in small doses. I must be strange.....

Yes you are strange indeed. if you really want to enhance the experience, next time you get stung, put the area of your body with the sting into nice cold creek water. :o

It's always been kinda helpful how they grow close together. I ve seen both next to each other. Kinda like oops fucked that up followed by That's handy !!

Nasty stuff alright, causes severe illness and death even:

"On Boxing Day 1961 two young men hunting in the Ruahine Range stumbled through a patch of tree nettle and received a number of stings on their limbs. Within an hour one of them had difficulty in walking and breathing, and then lost his sight. He died five hours later in hospital. His friend had similar symptoms, but recovered. Although this is the only fatal incident on record, a number of people have been very ill for two to three days after being stung."

When up on that other island I was chuckling to my self how hungry the sika are to browse the nettle as much as they had where we were.
The stems had been chewed right back.
Thinking it was safe I pushed thru it to get access to a small clearing. A deer had the last laugh, it must have caught a branch up as it fed thru it.
That branch once freed as I moved thru the thicket smacked me right between the eyes.
It had its full compliment of spines on it that's for sure.
It was going to ruin my day until I found a doc plant and scrubbed my mellon with it.
Wasn't instant relief but it didn't bother me much afterward unless I touched where I was zapped.
Never heard the fern shute trick but doc leaf will help.

Geez u make some bullshit up @Rushy..."paddocks full of dock" is caused by farmers failing to spray weeds that horses don't eat in a paddock usually too small to accommodate them and have been fed hay contaminated with dock seed from paddocks that farmers failed to clear of weeds before baleing.

I was always taught to singe the dock and then crush it to get the juice out and rub on. An old maori fella told me that about 40 years ago, works well

Funny how some things cross the world.
It is very common practice in England to use Dock leaves to rub on nettle stings for relief. Different nettle and most likely different Dock though.
I have flashbacks to about age 6 when I crashed by pushbike into a huge patch of nettles on a campsite, while wearing only a pair of shorts. :(

Same result Spook. Put a horse in a paddock know and pop there's a dock plant.

If I haven't been bush for a while I might get close or a brush on the hand. But after that, can spot the bush well before getting near it. Sort of like an inbuilt fear

May try wot vc suggested, about pissing on your affected parts next time. Only thing with that is during the roar u may become the hunted.:o

british nettles are the lite version.they're even made into tea...

Would have been good to know last roar, everyone in my group got to feel its sting. One guy slipped on a bank and went for a slide under a patch his bald head got stung bad.
I read somewhere that you can also make tea or an infusion out of the nz nettle too.
