Doc nuked the catlins couple weeks ago and still haven't put up the info on their website, I rang them this am to get them to email the map of where they dropped .
Here it is incase anyone was heading out there .

"Please see map attached showing the area that has been treated with 1080 as part of our BFOB campaign. Please note that deer and pigs should not be taken for food within this area*plus an additional 2km buffer zone*(because these animals are highly mobile).

It should be in the pesticide summary.

I just had a look an note the following "disclaimer":

"Important notes: Please Note - As at 25/10/2019 - the Pesticide summaries are experiencing technical difficulties. Not all treatment areas are being shown. We're working to fix this. Please contact your local DOC Office for site specific information. N.B. all normal access points to treatment areas are signposted with detailed information about where toxin has been laid."

I've lived down here for 6 months now and can't believe the amount of 1080 drops, had it pretty good in the north island compared to here.

    Hey fellas,

Any thoughts on how long the stand down period should be:

    1. For hunting in there at all?
    2. For taking a dog back in there?

Was a great area to take the indicating dog to for her first few deer - would love to get her back in there ASAP. I went into Wisp and Rata Ranges this morning but the bush I found was pretty tough going.

@Edunn its pretty disappointing eh. I have also been hunting in there abit with the dog. I believe the hunting stand down period is 4mths but I wait alot longer than that before taking the dog back in anywherethats been 1080'd. It's so toxic to them and just takes one bait or dead possum in a dry spot to be game over. I tend to wait at least 6mth and would only consider going in if there has been loads of rain. Other wise I tend to wait closer to a year.

Probably not what you want to hear!

For taking dogs in I wait 8 months minimum , upto 12 months if it's been dry after the drop cause baits will hang around for a long time if they dont get decent rain on them , thats me anyway not worth the risk of losing one of the hounds ,

For hunting without dogs should be fine in a few months

Cheers for the info guys. Not what I was hoping for but definitely good to know.

Have thought about a muzzle. Might get one and see how training goes with it on.

Otherwise will be doing some research to find new places to take the pup!

Don't take a dog in there until the signs are down and the all clear is given, the risk to your dog is just too high.

Plenty of good hunting in the catlins out side of the treated areas.

Good to hear there are other good I areas around the catlins. I tried wisp and rata ranges yesterday. Fair bit of sign and spooked a stag in velvet but the bush (where I was anyway) was pretty grim!
