Buy a lot of hi vis, you won't be alone in there.
Thanks Pengy, going before the roar so should be good....options open so ee can scope out all sorts....thanks Kawekakid also.......
I've lost three mates shot in there over the past 30 years. I never go there during the roar.
Hunter308 has shot all the deer anyway.
From wherever you park your vehicle walk at 90 degrees to the road and walk for an hour before you set up camp or hunt, that way you will lessen the chances of being shot. Most of the wankers that hunt the area keep to the edges, usually within sight of their vehicles. No good camping on the road side as you have to run the gauntlet every day of getting past them and the spot lighters will keep you awake most of the night. Don't roam the roadsides after dark wearing reflective hi vis as the dopey pricks shoot anything that reflects. Still a great place to hunt, just got to go deeper in.
Make that at least 2 hours directly away from any road or track.
It is a dangerous place. If you really want to take the risk, then drive the full length of the road first and count the vehicles and note their locations. Allow about 2 persons per vehicle so you have some idea of the population of hunters and where they are likely to be hanging out. If I go there, it is never during long weekends or public holidays or the roar month. More likely I would consider midweek hunt of 3+ days so you have time to get away from the loopys by walking beyond their comfort range with your pack and gear You'll more often see another hunter in the bush , than a deer unless you are well away from road or tracks. One local chap had his dog shot at his feet a few months ago, while he and the dog were sitting down taking a breather. Any other hunters you meet , you should have a yarn with them and clearly agree on boundaries or areas you will not encroach.
That would be the biggest tui billboard ever, the bastards keep dodging me :P
To the OP walk through poronui to oamaru river hut forget clements too many people in that area due to ease of access, oamaru hut is a 6 hour walk via te iringa from clements and 3hr 40mins through poronui (just leave bolt and ammo out of rifle when walking through poronui)
Both public and private Oamaru have been shot to sh*t.
Still need to be away from the hut and more commonly hunted (and spotlighted) areas.
Spooked one on the lawn of the hut last time there. Im lucky enough to be able to hunt weekdays. Have had the run of the place both times down there
Bloody hell….makes one think twice about hunting there….even when you are 2-3 hours from the road end!
Best bit of advice I can give you Bruce is concentrate on areas with fresh sign and go slow!
To all you hunters out there who cared to help thanx....we are GOING in week days, so the human population should be manageable eh...!! Also condolences to those have lost mates in the bush....Rule 4 always applies..Cheers will report back...
Thanks Hayden ....preciate that...
Thanks Scouser...weather looking pretty good, this time next Monday...Sika backstraps for tea eh...!!!!????
It's not the roar just yet, so mid week hunting should be OK, but watch out in May / June.
Sika and reds roaring in the kaweaka southern blocks
Hi guys
Kaweka-K, lots of sign down the stream you suggested....but 1 hour into the hunt Monday am 15 mins off Clements road bout half way between the Mill & Army Road...good breeze on the face a really good stag (only he saw him from the neck back and no time to throw some lead,) goes left away and puts a good tree between us, the girls, two good hinds and two yearlings go right...one yearling hind in a stand of small trees 35 metres away and eyeballs me .....I dont move she dont move...a stockstill stare out for five minutes....she lowers her head at last, I bring the firestick very slowly up but nearly at the shoulder...realises its not going end well and heads off.....BUGGA....the stag was meantime was going ballistic from behind his tree!!!! I stalked him moving away for 20 mins but headed for some shit windfall that I couldnt get thru quietly...so thats the excitement for my trip....the grandson chased a few down but no luck....oh well next time...plenty of sign for easter tho' good luck guys....70 permits already issued according to DOC...
Well I hunted the road today and found very few people there 5 cars at Teringa car park but they bow hunters, 1 car at the mill , 4 cars at end of road .There was a stag roaring this morning .but I needed to head to the tops for a look around so left the stag .Found a scrape and plenty of hinds so all good for later .Manage to see a hind on the road last night, but don't spotlight so let it go .There is a deer feeding along the quarry track so if you all hunt that 1 the road should be safe
All those people just be sure its a stag that's roaring. Always remember to Identify your target this coming 'silly' season guys. Happy hunting
Go over Easter. No one there then.
