coming to NZ in a month, need advice

Hi every one,
Let me introduce myself.
My name is Adrian, 46 years old physical engineer and I come from the other side of the planet, The Netherlands.
In a month time I will come to NZ. My goal is to do a hunting/trekking trip of about one month or maybe two. I am a bowhunter and would like to harvest my own meat during the trekking. I was thinking about hunting waterfowl or small to mid size game. What places would you recommend me to visit? During the trekking I would not mind meeting no one. So the more desolated the better. Just me and nature :-).

Hope you guys can give me some good advice.

Hi Adrian, best advice I can give is don't get caught slotting any waterfowl while you are here, I can't think of any that will be in season, and most of the other good sized bird life you would see in the bush is native and protected.

Geese, rabbits, hares are plentiful in the Canterbury high country, as ishoot said dont shoot any birds (except canadian geese) as they will be ether protected or out of season.

How about mid size game?

Let us know your schedule and where you want to travel and then its a bit easier for nominating hunting spots.

Well my schedule is from the beginning of November till the end of December and the spots I want to travel to depend on your advice :-)
It would be nice if there are some trees around for fire wood and protection from the winds.

An excellent book for NZ hunting (and fishing for that matter) is the Spot X Series.

By the sounds of it, you would prefer forests, rather than alpine areas?
Spring comes late to the alpine areas, so Nov to Dec will have plenty of dumb yearling deer wandering around.
I can think of a few treks in the central North Island around Taupo, where there are plenty of huts to walk to and drop off/pick shuttle buses that can drop you off at the start of the hikes.

The walks will cover bush hunting, trout fishing river and some alpine tussock areas.

If you want to meet as little people as possible South Island is the place.
