Hi guys, can anyone suggest good spots to go for a spear in Coromandel? I will camping around the area with the family for the first time this coming weekend. No boat with me so shore based suggestions would be appreciated.

Tuitawa is great for a shore based spear. Lots of rocks and kelp so plenty of green bone and moki. The odd snapper if you bust up a few kina and wait.
How advanced are you? Port Jackson is good for boarfish, pelagics etc but strong currents.. Harder to get good vis the closer to Thames you go. Around the other side I’ve shot kingfish all the way down around Whiritoa. So long as the vis is good, and the structure etc looks decent, you can’t go wrong anywhere on the peninsula.
Following with interest. Have moved not far away, and a mate just bought a place near tairua on the water. Have done tons of rec diving, but not a lot of gathering of sea things to put in my face
Alderman island is interesting if you can catch a charter
Aldies can be pretty lame. Seen it as a fishless desert on a few occasions and have had to pull spots out of the bag to pick up a few fish. North of tairua to the south end of hahei can turn it on then further north upto opito Bay. Not dived beyond that besides port Jackson once in shit viz which yielded nothing. Can swim off the campground at the southern end of hahei not the northern end as it is a reserve
Used to be a resident Black Marlin around the Aldies . That would have to be worth looking for
Cheers guys will check those places out. I have done most of my diving around fiordland being the closest spot to home so although I may not be used to diving deep I am happy to swim in wash and currents. Primary goal is to get a feed but I am super keen to shoot a kingie and a snapper!Quote:

End of the kingi season now but may still be a few around, heaps of snapper around still and always a chance of a john dory or boarfish on the weedlines.
Vis is a bit crap in close at the moment unfortunately as there has been a solid swell for the last few weeks.
Had my first dive at the north end of hot water beach. Shot a decent snapper(my first) and got a Cray. Dinner sorted for tonight
Opito bay was good too, saw a couple of real good size snapper, shot a panny and missed a few more(not on form). Monday at New Chums was good as well, shot a couple of good size Kawai so bring on the raw fish salad!
You certainly don't need a boat around here. Looking forward to a couple more dives then fly out to bazza for 5 days.
