Sadly the guiding industry has allowed for tipping to become part of a guides income now. For years tips were always classed as a bonus because we dont have a tipping culture here. Sometimes they were big, sometimes they werent. Sometimes the outfitter got a big tip just cos hes the outfitter, and the guy on the ground got FA. Sometimes the outfitter didnt take anything and the guide got some decent coin. But to rely on tips to bolster your income is asking for trouble, particularly in the NZ guiding scene. Tips should be seen as a bonus , not necessary but welcome. And now IRD and the banks have made it very hard to accept tips in cash, particularly if youre earning bugger all for the actual guiding. They want to know how you can survive and pay a mortgage and buy some toys when your income is only $35 per hour and you only "work" maybe 4 days a week, or 20 days a month.
