Hey there, welcome to the site.
Gut hooks are cool and all, but you can just use a knife properly![]()
Hi and welcome - lost count of how many deer I have skinned and no those gut hook things dont work well at all- waste of space - the problem is the hair binds in them and they simply dont run along the way you want -they become a lesson in frustration - a good sharp knife is much better - and I mean really sharp - to use those gut hooks you need to open the animal up first so why not just keep going with a knife ?? -- leave them in the hunting gimmick section and dont waste money on them -
Gut hooks work for gutting, but it's not that hard with a knife. I rarely gut an animal these days. Google the "gutless" method.
Love my old Eka swing blademean for skinning/caping too

i actually liked my buck zipper knife, problem is i cant find it!
I've got a buffalo river knife with a gut hook on the back of it, the knife itself is excellent for skinning but the guthook is absolute shite. If you're (rightly) concerned about nicking the gut whilst opening up the cavity, do a cut right under the sternum say about 2" long running towards the gut then holding your knife between middle and index fingers, with blade facing up between your....bugger it, I'll post a pic! Anyway, stick that in the hole you've just cut, you're fingers will push the guts out of the way so you don't nick them with the knife, the point of your knife should be hidden between your finger tips and run it down to the arse but stop short of the anus.

Some nice knicks on the edge of that blade
Yeh, that's what I do to gut.
Ask ya local scaffolder for one, they use them for shrinkwrapping
no it would be useless the hair would bind in it - see what Zedrex is doing that is how one opens up the gut- knife shape for a skinner is important - you dont want a sharp point - that will dig in to much - you should be able to run the knife down your arm without it cutting in - but its bloody sharp back from the point
The gadgets pictured (other than Zedrez's knife) are commonly called "Guntzell traps" - cause that's what they do, catch Guntzells . .. . And like any poor fish that gets tricked and reeled in, they seldom like to admit they were suckered!
