come on guys, can't believe there are no amateur "poop-ologists" on the forum.
post photos, or I am going to have to take Rushy up on his offer, and NZ post might just stop delivering to our house after that :D

Only photo of shit I can find from hunting at the lake. red deer shit
Attachment 4382
Yep Toby that is deer shit all right. EBF my interpretation of that photo is that the deer was browsing at the time.
That was the freshest we could find.
tx rushy & toby.
so rushy browsing coz it is not scattered and all looks like the same age ?
how long does it take to turn from brown (steaming fresh) to black ?
still keen to see some photos of goat & sheep shit for comparison
Yes browsing because it is not scattered. Deer crap like horse and cattle etc when fresh is a mid to dark green colour (not brown) as it is primarily vegetable matter. It turns black due to oxidation and exposure to sunlight. The time taken is dependent upon the prevailing conditions but if you ever come across fresh or even black which is still soft and green inside then you are in fairly close proximity to the animal.
If its green and steaming you probably spooked it off

Il add that fresh sign is shiny and slippery as it has a coating of slippery stuff on each pellet, dryed and crusty a few hours in direct sun(the mucus layer) but will last for a couple of days in cold/wet but not pissing down conditions.

there was a good article put out recently by the editor of one of the NZ hunting mags in pdf I think.
The only thing I remember was that after about twenty minutes the mucus layer is about dried and the poop is turning black. It has lost the green colour. But would surely depend on where it was dropped and humidity.
It was one of those articles "Ill come back to" but never did.
Someone else out there would of read it to.
Tx walkabout
Yup, those NZ Outdoor articles are awesome, they are the ones I mentioned in the firSt post. I managed to identify a couple of wallows based in them :)
My main problem remains identifying the difference between goat and deer shit... All those articles and the books I've gotten from the library show differences between different deer species...
Mission for next weekend is to find a goat busy taking a dump, so I can be sure of the source, so to speak, hehe.
Smell...there is no mistaking the odour of goat poo...because goats browse in extended family groups, you are not going to find isolated pellet heaps, but heaps of pellets...they will defaecate after cudding sessions, obviously enough, and whilst browsing...
Im interested in the difference between fallow, goats and reds. I know what goat and red shit is like but what if fallow looks like goat and really what I assumed was goat was really fallow.
Fresh Poo....
