Permit conditions: Permits and licences
Its not what you hit them with, its where you hit them, I remember my first deer, shot it with a 270, shot was slightly rear of the front shoulder and to my dismay it bolted.
Searched for two hours before finally locating it. The red had run about 100m and fallen under an old log. I was convinced the good old 270 would stop them in their tracks instantly but not so all the time. Had a few different calibers and ended up with a 243. Haven't had one run away even with this small caliber but I make sure I get the shot dead right or I don't bother taking it. I agree with others though, 308 is a good all rounder and have also mates that rave about the 6.5 x 55
A guy asked me on Sunday what gun he should get when he upgrades his 233 for his son, he was thinking .243. As luck would have it I brought my 6.5 with me, he only took one shot and seemed rather happy about it. Can almost grantee his son will likely have a 6.5x55 in the future
My first rifle was a 300win mag, have used a 7.62x54r, 30cal m1, 7.62x39 and have to say the .303 is my favorite, nice calibre with good knock down power but nice recoil and not too big.
