    Desert road/ national park area

We are have some time to kill (no pun intended haha) midweek and will be heading down through the dessert road. We have only hunted on local doc land in the Kaimais and private land areas and are not sure where to go in for the national park desert road area. We can park up overnight. I don’t want your secret hunting spots but would anyone be willing to share the best area to go in or somewhere we can go in for a shoot? I assume with all the army area we can’t just go in anywhere? Is it an area worth hunting?

Definitely can't just go off the road mate, one sure way to get in trouble.

Have a look up the end of Waipakihi rd, not far away and some reasonable river flats and ok bush.

Yeah didn’t think so, I’m not too sure what land is for the army or not. I’m not familiar with the area for hunting but have always wanted to head out.

If you're unsure of boundaries check your permit or check out this site https://www.wams.org.nz/PublicAccessAreas/

This will give you legal routes in and doc boundaries etc

Rangipo intake, tree trunk gorge, kaimanawa, and waipakahi roads all available to hunt and all worth a look

Kaimanawa road has lots of good campsites. Eastern side of the Desert road for Sika Western side for Reds.
