    Devilskin Saddle Hunting

    Hi everyone,

Long-time reader and relatively novice hunter. Looking to get out into Lewis Pass in the coming weeks with a mate over the coming weeks to try and get my first deer. I am looking for any sort of tips or advice for hunting the area as I've only ever been with mates up the Rangitata, Lake Heron, and Lake Tennyson with some big ks put in. I'd appreciate any advice, cheers guys.

Welcome aboard,as everyone tells me there are deer everywhere not seen that myself but it's still good to put boots on the ground and explore some new country. Good luck with your hunting journey.

Cheers for the reply, Trooper. Yea, nah will be heading out there regardless to get out into some mint country (hopefully) so was just more looking for trail tips or things to watch out for that catch you off guard if you don't know the area well.

Yup lots of deer all around that area. Usual story, lots of glassing all evening till last light. Find a good vantage point off the skyline. Watch the wind, never get upwind of the deers. Be very careful coming over ridges, sneak over very carefully into a new basin or whatever, stay low. Don’t walk along ridgelines. Be up early while it’s still dark. Walk to a good spot in the dark or using a red head torch. Get into a good glassing spot before first light and watch as sun comes up. If you spot something never approach it from upwind.

    Watch the wind.

    My 2c worth

Keep the wind in your face
Walk half as slow, look twice as much
    Expect the unexpected
    110% identify your target
    Have confidence in your rifle
    Get half as close again
    Don’t rush your shot
    Enjoy the success
