Anyone know of a place I could hunt during the roar - problem I have is mobility after a accident; I'm still recovering - I can walk a fair way - but would prefer something with tracks, and easyish going land - We do have a argo - great for distances
Any help would be great - last 2 years roar's were ruined because of this - 3rd time lucky?!

Thompson's track in the Kaimais is the most accessible hunting spot I know of. It is a 4wd track which is in good shape, especially if its been dry - when I was up there last I even toyed with the idea of driving my 1.5l little nissan sentra up there (I don't have a 4wd). You could drive most the way up and once you get to the top, its about a 15min walk (on a good track) to a big clearing. Like any place that is easy access, it gets pretty hammered; but in saying that, it still produces. I don't know what its like in the roar though, you could PM spook to ask him, he is a local and lives at the start of the track. If you are lucky, it will be that place that everyone who hunts it will say "Hell know, go to that place in the roar? that's like suicide, if its busy outside of the roar, it will be super busy during it". Sometimes a popular spot will be left alone in the roar because everyone goes further afield, or thinks it will be over-populated. Its worth looking into.
I hope you have a good roar in spite of the mobility issue.

On the flipside, the bush up thompsons is pretty thick with supplejack. So you have easy access on the clearing, but the surrounding bush is quite the opposite.
Phillip, we could think about altering our roar plan to accommodate faregame. We could set up the base camp where we were last time and operate from there. That way faregame could at least hunt the tracks and you and I (and Dougie if she comes) could still peel off and spend 2 - 3 days and nights out in the middle.

Only downside is that its SH1 for hunting during the roar and will be shot to shit afterward... but with sika anythings possible!

When does the roar start?

TR this question is sort of like the "how long is a piece of string" question. The rut (stags roaring) is triggered by hinds coming into season (oestrus). Oestrus in maturing hinds is determined by body weight so young hinds and old hinds reach oestrus at different times and that is influenced by feed availability (this year having drought means that feed will be diminished and some young hinds may well not even cycle until they reach two years of age next year). To answer your question more simply the red deer roar is typically from mid March to the mid April but it can and does extend either side dependent upon where you are.Quote:

You could get in touch with Danny at Go Bush adventures, he mainly only lets bowhunters in but is now letting the odd rifle hunter in, I doubt you'll get in for the roar as the family usually are in there hunting it...
Very easy to get around and you don't have to go far for a deer or two, lots of old logging tracks and skid sites on the property, might be a go for after the roar, but you'd need to book in quickly, not sure what he charges for rifle hunters but for around $350 will get you a weekend in there and a deer.
