The elusive pureora stag hare stoat animal

I saw a flash of brown fur as something turned and ran away from me so sneaked in closer to see what i am 90% sure was a big hare jumping over some brush and fallen tree branches. Is this a common occurance to see a hare 500m+ from the nearest farmland? Didn't see a tail so dont think it was a stoat but could be the smallest deer ever seen ever haha

pureora pygmie wildman??? .....legend says they grow not much bigger than a hare , evolution so they can navigate thru all the supplejack and bush lawyer coarse brown fur to protect them from the ongaonga and big feet to confuse any hunters trying to track them..........

we often see hares at least 3-400yards into the native bush, and for what its worth, the backsteaks/straps from a hare treated like venison steak will give the best fallow/sika a run for their money.

Hares can be damn near anywhere, have seen them in Tahr blocks even, tasty little backsteaks if you can be bothered butchering them!

@199p @phillipo & @ARdave and myself saw a hare on the start of sawtooth range last year, possibly the ugliest part of the Ruahines and there's a bloody hare sitting on the edge of a 200 foot drop.

Why do you north islanders think you have mountains big enough to constitute a range😆

Seen hares and chukar above 6000' when stooging around the hills in the machine all the time.

Late summer you will get deer well above 5000' in South Westland, no tucker for miles.
I always wondered why they were camped up that high in the rocks and crags.

Didnt want to ruin the possibility of coming across a deer if it was later in the day i would have given it 150 grains. Good to know its fairly common and i wont waste so much time when it happens again
