A few less Goats in Canterbury!!
Waitangi weekend rolls around and my only plans are to relax...hard. Until my mate calls of course and says we should take the rifles for a walk. Seeing as we don't get out for a hunt as much as we'd like and the fact that we are still complete newbies. I thought it rude to decline such an offer.
So we head off in my mates truck. Going to check out an area close to chch that we've been told holds a few four legged critters. So what you've got to realise is. When me an my mate go out for a hunt, being newbies we are ever so hopeful. You could even go so far as to say we're pretty pumped. All the while knowing we're probably not going to see anything let alone line something up in a scope. This is of course due to the fact that we have absolutely know idea what the heck we're doing out there .And on this wee trip we were no different.
Getting to our destination just before midday on what was going to be a hot one by all accounts. We weren't very hopeful to see anything out feeding in the open. But f*%k it. We're only taking our rifles for a walk right? As we do, we pick a decent sized hill and climb the bloody thing. That's what your suppose to do right?
Getting to the top we don't really see much. On our way up though the hill was littered with 'sign'.
"Hey bro. Is that deer pooh?"
"I think its deer Pooh"
"It could be sheep pooh bro"
"There are a few sheep around"
"We need a book on pooh bro"
"Should we stop calling it pooh?"
Anyway so we decide to walk back down and go somewhere else. Just about to unload and jump back in the truck I spotted black and white movement bout 200m away. Scope up and steadying myself I see a mob of goats(the first feral goats we've ever seen). "Bro they're goats!!"
"Get the F*%k outta here!!"
We weren't to keen on taking long shots and besides we were on a public road so we decided to close the gap. We slowly walked up the road in full view of these goats who were looking straight at us and themselves, slowly making there way back into the bush. My mate realized he'd left his truck wide open and decided to go back and lock up. Idiot!!!! I knew there was of course no time for this and decided to pick up the pace before these goats made it to far into the bush. Having lost site of these buggers it was time to move up fast. Making a hell of a racket I climbed up into were we had first spotted them. Moving quickly I decided to at least get to were I last saw them, stop and have a look around. Heart pumping and sucking I the big ones I pop my head up to have a look. Not seeing anything but hearing movement I waited and sure enough this lone goat moves out to reveal itself about 20meters away. Having nothing to rest on I tried to steady myself as best I could. Lets face it. It was pretty much point blank. Neck...cross hairs.... Boom!!!
One down and goats that weren't there a second ago running everywhere. Off into the bush they all go. Thinking they were kinda easy to sneak up on I went further into the bush after them. And sure enough 30 odd meters in I spot them grazing on shrubs like nothing had happened. Neck... cross hairs... Boom!!! another one down and goats running straight at me. franticly ejecting the empty casing and pushing another one into the spout I go to line up again but slip. After regaining my footing I emptied the spout and decided to gatherer the downed animals and point my mate in the mobs direction so he could have a go. Whenever he decided to show up that is. Idiot!!! He never did find them.
Anyway animals were easy as to find and hump back to the road. We cut them up an ate them the next day. Goat tastes mean as!! Why do people give it to there dogs?
Anyway the trip back to town didn't suck like normal. And I'm kinda staring to think we might not be the shittest hunters in NZ
