After hunting in piropiro flats, rotorua, kaimais, still with no luck i think i struggle still to find slips and places that arent thick bush to find them easier more learning required. But hey finally happy off my cousins farm on bush edges. Any advice for me on public land?Attachment 113967
Thick bush is a good place to find them.
Have you been spooking them?seeing them?seeing fresh sign?if so you just need to tune your stalking,if not try and get into the right areas and go from there
Keep going back to those places you mentioned. It can take a while to get get to know an area and how best to hunt it. When you are in the bush take it slow and keep the wind in your face. Dawn and dusk are the best times so concentrate your hunting around those times.
I usually found fresh sign then wait and sit for a bit and see. I walk really slow wind in my face usually. I think im just picking shit spots on topo and never really find clearings easily.

Try sitting at one of the spots and see what happens
Don't worry about finding clearings, hunt the gully heads that are catching the sun and missing the wind at this time of year.

Hunt the area's that have a higher concentration of Animals,you are going to have to cover alot of ground in order to find those area's though.

Maybe you need to camo up a bit!? I've never seen any sun flowers where I hunt and If I did, just like a deer, i'd probably go "WTF" ! ;)
Congrats- nice fat spikes. Bare legs and arms are going to stand out like flash lights in the bush, cover up with some Camo or dark colours
Next 3 months can be hard hunting, deer movement is well down, you need to find good sign and really concentrate in those areas. The north side of any ridge, valley system is going to be warmer. Can be very hard in the public domain.

slow down till you think you are going too slowly once sign is found...then slow down some more...4-5 steps,pause,look around,4-5 more steps look around,suss out where your next steps are,look around,4-5 steps.....wind direction most important....if they smell your lynx all over body spray (DONT GO OVERBOARD before a hunt) or your smelly bum they wont stick around but will bo gone.
less walking and more looking.
when you stumble ,you are getting tired.stop and make a brew,then move off slowly...many a deer has been caught coming in to check a fella out who is having a brew....

Google earth is a good way of finding clearings. Then just a matter of finding them in the area you are hunting. It can be a bit harder to find deer in winter at times, but the time you spend now will make it easier for spring when they are more active.

this is how i found alot of my spots......... look at aerials to pick out spots deer woould like to be based on clearings ,slips, sun , type of vegetation etc then transpose those spots onto a topo map to see how hard they are to get to (need to really understand how a topomap works and you should know this anyway) then get out there to either confirm or write off an area ....... (alot are seasonal and or time of the day dependaent to so something to remember)Quote:

If it's bush your hunting, then if your sweating your going to fast. Into the wind and hunt where the sign is.
Don't look for the whole animal look for something that's not right i.e. Ear flick, back, foot and shape. Then identify.
If you can go out with someone who has more experience then so much the better as they can show you the finer points that you would miss by reading about it so like the above posts keep at it get out there.
As a side note it took me three years to shoot my first one in the Kiamais but once I got my first then it all seemed to click and I was averaging 1 for every 2.5 days. That was back in the early 90's when deer numbers where a lot lower than they are today.
