hey all im a young fulla who tries to get out as much as possible but due to it being winter i dont get out as much as i dont have super good gear designed for the cold nights and im restricted to being in a hut which may be full at times. so i was wondering what were the rules were about having a fire at your own bivy to stay warm so you dont have to rely on huts.
As Mohawk said. Go for it. Use some common sense and you'll be fine
Definitely, go for it, learn how to make a fast heating smaller type fire and have at it. As an aside, DoC doesnt have any land, they are just the managers of Public Conservation Land........public.
Its not DoC land. Its public land (yours), only administered by DoC. As others have said go for it and use common sense. In the depths of winter a roaring big fire warms and cooks well. At the height of summer a completely different approach needs to be taken.

Just make sure the conditions pass the headline test... i.e. are you likely to be reading "Hunter responsible for large forest fire" in the days following... I bloody love a good campfire, and while, as above, you're generally pretty sweet in winter, it doesn't take much at all for it to go from 'Ahhhhhh..." to 'Ahhhhh Fuuuuuck!!!'
Note common sense is a very, very strong theme above.

Way back in 1972 while in the army (fuck is it really fifty years ago) I killed and cooked a wood pigeon while doing a survival exercise. The directing staff found the feathers and at the debrief asked who had done this. Proud as punch I stuck my hand up (my dearly departed nana would have been proud of my honesty and looking after myself in the bush like she had shown me). Fucking cost me two weeks confinement to barracks and loss of wages. That is a long way of me saying “never again”. Id suggest if it is a permanent type camp like I frequent make a fire place. Keep adding rocks everytime you go. Keep a good wood supply. You cant go wrong.

As an interesting side note, if you are planning to light a fire with snow on the ground (a good challenge for a long winters evening...) and then melt some snow for drinking water, any snow left above the top of the vessel will absorb the smoke (of which there is a lot if you are burning wet wood), and make the water taste like pure charcoal. Almost undrinkable. If you really get the fire cranking, it will also melt the snow from the trees and make it rain. Some of my best hunting memories are sitting around a fire. Can't wait to take my boy out and burn something when he's old enough. Enjoy!
