Glow sticks showing the safe way home.

I dont claim this as my own idea but i used it not long ago And recomend it.And I dont feel ive contributed much here of any real use.

I sometime hunt an area in the arvo when im short of time its a basin with a gully between you and the basin and the safest way over to the basin if you plug a deer its sidling around to the upper left of the basin which in the dark with just a head lamp is tricky and risky thats without a deer or backstaks in your pack.So with the intention of bowling one over i went out and purchased a ten pack of glowsticks for two buk 50 at the wong shop and headed for the track .Sure enough forty mins to dark a spiker popd up and got dispatchd as i made my way over and around to the basin I planted a glow stick every bad spot and turn and up and down untill I ran out. Id spread them out fairly evenly over the risky bits.buy now it was just about dark and after taking fillets and back steaks and the hind qtrs I headed back aiming for my glowsticks.As i got to each stick i put it in my pocket and made my way to the next one, it made my trip back around quicker and i believe safer I dont know who else has done it but when my old man use to do night dives they used to put glow sticks on there tanks which is were i thought of it.

Yep, I started using it fishing at night during winter in high country lakes - tied one to my truck to see where it was, and to my backpack so that people knew someone was fishing there. Then moved to using it when I went sea run fishing at river mouths after dark.
Now I use it when spotlighting if I have leave the vehicle on my own..

Its funny.I have no problem with walking in in the dark and while Ive done it plenty of times I prefer not to walk out in the dark.
Thats when you are usually tired, low concentration and are likely to twist an ankle/take a fall etc.

Im lazy and use a GPS if it is somewhere I havnt been before. I generally dont use anything apart from a headlight otherwise.

A mate of mine used the solar powered garden lights at camp so he could find it in the dark. It was quite good as you could see them well and gives piece of mind knowing you havent walked past your camp when coming back at night. Also means he doesnt need to carry a gps.

which on my to buy list which is getting longer buy the day.

I used to hunt a couple of spots where it was a good 1.5hr walk in from the road. We'd hunt these gullies until dark and then use our old maglites to find the pink tape track and walk out. Basically to save a night in the bush. Coming out at night had all sorts of issues, used to lose the track all the time, batteries would go flat, bulbs would blow, etc. Most trips were an adventure, considering we often had loads of venison on board as well. Then one day when the roadies were replacing the old wooden marker pegs with plastic ones I grabbed a heap of reflectors off them, cut them into small squares and nailed them to trees along the tracks into these spots. Made walking out in the dark an absolute breeze. I'd recommend it for any regular hunts you guys do where you often walk out at night.

Im the same as R93 when hunting in new spots. Happy to walk out in the dark with a headlight and some spare batteries. Always carrying a map, compass and GPS in new country anyway.

Done that ourselves in a valley we tahr hunt in with a lot of beech forest. Usually end up up the mountain in the dark then you have to find your way back through the forest, which is reasonably tricky in such rugged country. We put up the reflective strips which stand out with head light from 100m away quite well and ensures a comfortable journey back to camp?

Yeah it's ideal. Got a small crew doing a few blocks down south today, they've been going fulltime since start of June. Bigger crew coming down tomorrow to put in 20 odd thousand to finish off a block, which I will be stoked to finally walk away from! About half way through now, another 350 odd thousand to go into four blocks.

Too wet for us up here today but have had a good run with the weather. The trees need a drink now. We have 350000 left to plant yet but done 500000 so far

There is a newish product known as fire flys. Small glowstick type product that can be clipped onto trees, last for a week. Cheaper going to see mr Wong
