Yeah, I used to do it, it's actually rather fun and a good way to make money. Goat's are worth money to the works. We'd chase them around and tie a rope around their necks and lead them away. (as long as they weren't stubborn or we'd stick them on the spot)
Some kid actually died in Wairoa chasing goats the silly fella.
Don't knock it till ya try it I say! Harder to catch something in your hands then it is to shoot or even use a bow! we had a team of 3-4 to do it best. The trick for nanny goats is the catch the slow babys and hide behind a tree and hold their back legs exposing the front most times the mum will look back if you're lucky she'll even walk back that's when you have your mate sneak around her.
The easiest way of course, was to slowly get close without spooking them but to let them know you were there and try get them to a corner of a fence and then get as close as you can without them running through the fence then up and run they have to wait for each goat to get through the holes and you can get them like that.
