Hi mate,
I presume you have it in the ballot - what period? Weirdly my mate got it first period and I got it second period. I've called haast heli about a landing site who told me to call DOC, who told me to call the heli operator!! There are no designated spots so can land wherever the heli pilot wants. Doesn't look like a whole load of options other than close to the beach. I haven't been able to get any closer to identifying a landing spot. It's about $2250 return I think from the end of the Cascade road.
Also looks like moving up and down the block with any great speed will be along the river only, so if the river is high it could be a tough block to hunt!
Can't find any info on the block at all. It also doesn't have a heap of elevation so not sure how to tackle it as this stage.
That being said, that episode NZ Hunter did going to Big Bay showed some hinds on the beach just below that block, so there must be animals in there somewhere.
Cheers,
G
Hi G
Thanks for the contact, I have it 3rd period.
You’ve had as much luck on info as I have by the sounds of it!
I have had the spoon and gorge river blocks before, front country.
Generally enough scrubby stags to keep one entertained, thinner on the ground further in I have found.
I think the hunters club went into barn bay on the casacade, not big bay where the Hackett is.
I’ll let you know if anything helpful comes up.
Cheers
Pete
I walked from the south side of the Cascade to Big bay following the old bulldozer track down the coast. We camped at Hackett creek there is a site there just up from the beach. There was a load of gear that had been flown in for the coming roar including a generator! Good luck with your hunt.
There’s a couple of semi established campsites upriver, that’s where we camped with the option of hunting up/down river, lots of slips, plenty of deer, stags are small & scrubby but fun hunting.
