Hey guys, headed down there in May from the US. Many of you have given me some great information to help plan my trip.
For those of you who have hired a helicopter to drop you off, what is the standard gratuity/tip for your pilot? 10-15%?

None. They're paid by the hour. We don't tip in NZ.

@7mmwsm nope. It will only be an excuse for employers to not raise wages. Dont go there. Way to many assholes out there that will do just that

@Buckslyr So what do you do in the States tipping wise if say you get bad service at a restaurant?
Save your 10-15% and spend it in some of the smaller towns you travel through, enjoy the country have a great time. If you are doing DIY hunts on doc land hope you have a lot of success. :thumbsup:Quote:

If you feel the need to make a donation when you a here , Donate to the rescue helicopter in the area you are hunting:)
Please don't tip. I've lived in the US. Its important to tip US service people because the pay is so low. We do not have that culture here. Apart from the fact that tourists think its the right thing to do and so locals cotton on to it to swell their wallets. Please don't do it. I've worked in hospo.. tips are nice when you get them but distort our economy and constitute cultural pollution.. Please don't.

Our standard tip at a restaurant for satisfactory service is usually around 20%. So the worse they are, the worse the tip. If they are flat out bad, I won’t leave a tip at all.Quote:

The tricky thing in the US is knowing where or when you tip and when you don’t.
You don’t tip retail workers in clothes shops. At least not the ones I shopped in.
You always tip restaurant staff. Where you are waited on.
They are taxed on the assumption you’ve tipped them. So if you don’t tip them, it actually costs them money which is why they get so dirty on you.
Number 1 thing to always remember if you choose not to tip. Tell them you’re Australian. They can’t tell our accents apart.
Here I nearly always tip in restaurants if the service is good. They aren’t well paid, and if it’s someone with a good work ethic, made my meal a good experience because they looked after me, then $$
A box of beer or bottle of whiskey is always appreciated
