help with NZ visitors firearms application

    Hi all hunters!
My name is Marek and I live in Slovakia mountain region called High Tatras in Europe, I love hunting and being outdoors a lot I always dream about freedom DIY hunting in great country like you guys have, so I and my wife we decide come to NZ for month just enjoy hunting few chamoix and tahrs and get some hardyards to ours feetand spend nice time together
So we starting prepare things bought fly ticket some gear etc.... booked first two nights in Christchurch and I was trying to fill up online NZ visitors firearms application but at last fields they ask for me Address where firearms will be stored while in NZ, who with and their NZ firearms licence NO. I can put hotel adress but still donīt have name and firearms NO. so it looks like end of our trip and wasted money for fly...
I was bit surfing and find out this group of hunters, you guys looking like right men so maybe you could give me any advice how I can solve that bad situation...
    I really appreciate any answers
    thanks

    Hi there and welcome.
Are you using any guided outfit? What about helicopter company? They could help you with this. Otherwise inform your hotel, they may have a safe (probably not) but could be worth a try. Failing that you could try the Christchurch NZDA.

    Hi Marhu,
You basically need a sponsor with his own firearm licence.
Unless you go with a guide it is going to be very hard to find somebody who would vouch for you. Bow hunting or a camera is an alternative that does not require all the paperwork drama.
Maybe on this trip you will discover spots where animal are and meet people that would actually like to sponsor you for another trip in the future?
    Good luck

Also check with your airline regarding carrying firearms, some airlines won't do it for overfly reasons (the country they fly over en-route). Some countries also won't allow transit passengers with firearms as luggage (transit passengers in Australia come to mind). Emirates via Dubai is a direct flight to NZ and they allow firearms for luggage.

And when flying in NZ don't have the bolt in the same case as the firearm, it won't be allowed by the NZ airline, bolt must be packed separately and can't be carried on the plane as carry-on luggage.

Assuming you can, when you arrive in NZ, your firearm is put into a secure lockup near one of the luggage carousell's, only the Police will unlock it and get your firearms.

If coming all that way, I would suggest a guide of some sort. Depending on the guiding you want, some of it is more like a local knowledge host. Its not like Africa etc where it costs many thousands. You are coming all this way so just a few dollars more is worth it. People who are unaccustomed to our weather, enviroment and hazards can easily get into trouble and this is where a local can mean the difference between life and death. They know the area and can make a yay / nay call without all the adrenaline and stuff and make sure you get home with tales to tell. We dont have dangerous animals, but the landscape and weather has killed many times before........

Hey mate il shoot you a PM...

PS- You will NOT need a guide if you have half an idea of what you;re doing and want to achieve the ultimate DIY hunts in NZ...
its all very accesibile and the animals are around, plus you have time on your hands.

So its not hard at all, some of you guys are a bit "glass half empty", we need to welcome visitors and learn to value our natural resources . . . . Its a bit sad when you get shown up by an outfit like GC.

Gun City (Christchurch) will happily act as a sponsor ( call or email Coop) and supply a licence number etc for the form. If you need to leave a firearm with them they will charge a daily fee which is fair enough.

Im generally a welcoming type of dood as well but im sitting on the fence a little with regards to visitors coming and staying in our remoter or country areas and not enhancing that in some way or in some cases actually making it worse , hiring a guide would be a good start or some sort of visitor hunting/fishing licence , competing with us kiwis for ballots , hunting over the roar period the list could go on , so what got me thinking last year I took a young Swedish bloke under my wing after his stuff got nicked up nelson way I figured hed gotten off to a crap start & I should show him a good time seen as how he,d come all this way to find some gold & can only imagine his impression of the people that live up there ! , so he stayed here off & on i put him on a bit of a spot & loaned him a dredge for a few weeks , took him hunting , nice guy we had no problems other than he didn't listen to direct orders about rain & rivers he had to get rescued by the station & then by me as his car was stuck between raging creeks ,i had to really twist his arm to shout the Sheppard a box for rescuing him too , anyway he also has a popular blog for his fellow countrymen , really nice pic,s of the places hed camped , naming areas etc , and that got me thinking do we really want more , possibly many more tourists coming here to our spots , camping , hunting , fishing , competing with us for free , its been grating at me for a few weeks , i must admit i do have a bit of self interest with regards to the guiding side of things so im not against people coming to NZ & enjoying our outdoors but paying there way in some form, i guess its pretty close to the freedom camping debate but looking back at the young lad cruzing around the country for the last 12 months sleeping in his small tent or car spending bugger $ , though he did start eating possums so il give him that! but then passing a lot of that info onto the interweb , the how to guide ! well not quite but along those lines .

Sharing of information is whats really the cause of all this. Now you can photograph and record anything and share it with the globe.People want to have loads of "Likes" and or dream of having a travel blogg that they get paid for.

I was home for 7 weeks,I met three overseas hunters on public land during that time. Two Swedes and an Italian. Most overseas touristsvwould happily pay a fee to hunt on public land. Its money really there for the taking,if you want a Visitors firearms licence then it cost $500 unless you are here competing.

We give them free ACC cover so you couldn't expect them to pay to hunt our DOC estate, next will come the "living wage" while their here.
