Hind calling to bring in stags

I've heard of it, but never tried it. I might give it a go this roar if I get an opportunity. They use it pretty effectively in this video.

Quite like that video. I’ll be seen people do fawn calls too to lure the hinds in. Where in NZ is that filmed ?

In Canada we used deer calls ( sounds like a fawn in distress) and we bought deer in from over half a km away and they come in quick, one time on a clear cut we called a doe in and she nearly bowled my son over as it was within 5 or 6 feet of us. If there had been a buck with the does I would imagine it would have followed in also.

Calf calling like that really works, seen it done just like the video. Not sure if anyone imports them as the one I saw came from the US.

Softly looks to do the job, I do note that they only do it having already located a stag.

well, after seeing that I need to get me a yeti flask and a maven spotting scope ASAP for sure. Could it be that the guide was holding a bucket of sheep nuts? What baffles me is, if this is a winner why is it only now coming to prominence, are kiwi hunters a bit slow? looks to be worth a try

Most experienced hunters have known for years, but I guess the traditional form of roaring in your stag has a more manly feel about it Plus a calf / fawn call cant be made out of a bit of tube or pipe.
To take another popular form of American enticement, rattling of antlers actually works on red deer as well. Though I have usually seen only the younger stags more curious of this method when used.

You don't need a call to do it. I was told to hold your nostrils and make a "meee" sort of noise by blowing through your nose then letting go of your nostrils at the end.
He sort of shows it in this video at 3:36

WARO in open country like that soon thins the deer numbers out.

I have long thought of using hind call but never got around to actually doing it. I was going to use an Elk cow call, they sell them in America. Bleating like a goat will keep them hanging around and circling to cut your wind, I remember doing that a few times after spooking a deer in bush I couldn't see. Conversely, I think roaring like a stag will reassure hinds if they hear you messing around in the bush, they seem to ignore you after they hear that.
Rattling for fallow bucks works well if you know your fallow ground. Never got any reaction from a red stag during the roar doing it though, possibly because their territories are much bigger and they just didn't hear me.

A mate who grew up in Scotland told me they used the blade of grass between the thumbs whistle to do deer counts in the Highlands (his dad was a gamekeeper). It supposedly sounds like a fawn in distress, and brings the hinds running.
I tried it once when there was a young hind grazing on the neighbouring property, it worked well, she came trotting up the hill and over the boundary fence. I suspect it may only work at certain times of the year (when fawns are around), iirc it was December when I tried it.

Surprised at the low numbers here who not used/tried or heard of it

I threw away my Roaring horn 10 years ago but was using the Meew noise 10 years prior to that
It brings the stags straight in and even doing it when you not sure animals are there will bring not only Stag but others in
I have found here where I live - they do wizen up to it

You do not do it through your nose - but you do sort of nasal it - if that makes sense
I have taught a few and I say to them - say Nea - like Na in no, but with that nasal pitch to it
So it ends up more like Neearr

Roaring works in country that has had no pressure and it works in the 12-24 hour testosterone peak of a Stag when he lost his marbles completely
But this Neea - works all year round

    PS
Next time you drive past a Deer Farm with Deer in front paddock - stop and do it - watch the reaction
