How to work out bullet drop.

Hey Guy's,

So I have a .270 Remington and wanted to know how I can work out the bullet drop. Im using federal bullets which are Weight: 130gr.

And my rifle is sighted in for 200 meters.

Also if anyone knows of any shooting ranges you can shoot at in the Hawkesbay area id be interested to know where they are.

1. Ignore the supposed velocity on the box, its wildly optimistic
2. Either set up A1 or A2 sized targets at 300m, 350m, 400m and 450m and see how much they are dropping from a 200m zero
Or get/borrow a chronograph, find out what speed you are shooting at, enter in details such as the speed, BC of bullet, altitude, scope height above bore, etc into an online drop chart (plenty around, google them) and it will give you a rough idea, although I would still recommend the step above to confirm.

I just bought the cheaper app of Bullet Flite, highly recommend. You'll need your muzzle velocity though and a good guesstimate of wind speed, but I'm finding it's working well with my educated guesses!

As for ranges - make one. Maybe see if somebody can lend you a range finder. I've been practicing at a "natural" range using clearings on hills, rocks etc as targets. Best practice available in my opinion . You might need to take a spotter with some binos with you though.

Thanks for the info team, much appreciated. :) Il be getting onto that this weekend, dont wanna take a shot at a deer if Im not 100percent sure where the bullet should be going :)

Centre of reticle (scope) to centre of bore.

PS, get lots of practice in at longer ranges.
A drop chart is only a part of it, reading the wind is far more difficult and is the major factor to consider.
Reactive targets like a bizalloy plate or water filled milk bottles make it more fun. :thumbsup:

I found the Strelok ballistic app to be good so far. But what dogmatrix said at the topic of thread is the best way of doing it as you need to check you drop at all distances you will be shooting at anyway as the ballistic app you use may be out or velocity you give it may be out.

Validate,validate validate.write up a drop chart then fill it in with real information from actual shooting it's the best way mate.
