My problem is recoil . 6.5x55 is about the best option for power ,recoil , and accuracy a guy could hope for.
mines 120 years old , shoots moa ,
The 96 action needs the lock time sped up and the trigger touched up with a file but other than that its one of the finest rifles ever made.
ill never sell it and doubt ill ever break it.
It's in the 2014 catalogue that they send out.
Had a quick look online on my phone and can't see it either so probably worth calling them on the phone.

still hasn't replyed my question.

Mate its your first rifle not your last.
You will sell it later and move on to something nicer later on.
Just Buy anything from trademe bigger than a .243 with a 4 power scope or better and go hunting.
He has now.... @veitnamcam
Is that a fricken Loupy copy he has added? That guys a munt
Shit I could have brought that tardme 270, smites animals left right and centre deal for 500 bucks and saved a f@#king fortune :D
Seriously might I suggest doing a Hunts course and trying as many other guns as you can.
Someone at the local deerstalkers might even have something they would part with that you could see, touch, feel and shoot first.
I have some real shockers in the flesh which were described as gold standard on that site.
Would be a shame to see you sink all your cash into a dud.
Well fuck, looks I'll be changing to a .270 now. Can't argue with those facts
:D

First rifle, limited budget , but a decent budget, 800$ is nothing to sneeze at.
If you wish to buy new, rather than second hand
Perhaps you could look toward the marlin xl7, I hear they are a fairly competent rifle with a good accuracy reputation.
One of the Howa packages maybe.
I would look at The drunkfish's savage ss 308 on here its a good deal.
bloody shit phone
Bugger me if you use the "buy now" he will throw in the Leupold for free, pity it may possibly be fake, at least it looks that way from the picture and from here Counterfeited Leupold Mark 4® riflescopes.
Buyer Beware I guess
possummatti. If you haven't already done so, pop in and have along chat with Chris in Sportsworld, matamata. He has a smallish selection that you can have a feel of, and is a real good bugger to talk to.
I was in there yesterday and quite tempted by a wee Bergara scout in 44 mag. @700
Awesome answer you got VC:)
And you buggers leave my auction alone:)
270 in 770 is the way of future, ask @Gibo the poor bugger has one on a tikka:)
Something like this would do too.
Interarms MK X Mauser in 243 | Trade Me
think the guy on the trademe auction got a bit defensive on that one VC
if the 6.5-06 was available as an option in a factory rifle I would have had one of those over my 270 any day, I just have to be greatful for what I got I had a choice of 270 in my budget or no rifle at all :D buggered if I was going to get a shitty budget rifle again with the exception of the marlin X7 I would grab another one of those in a heartbeat any day. Do I regret owning a 270? no I do not :P
Have to agree on the Marlin. I luv my 243 :D
:innocent:270, mouse guns, just look at the iddybiddy bullet that falls out the front of most of them :innocent:
Buy this man. $650, Quality shooter for a hella decent price.
If I had the cash it would be in my safe already

Yup what nick and Neckshot have said. Buy this, good accurate rifle's and in ss so less maintenance to bite you on your first rifle, mighty 308 and should have a 1/10 twist so can run the 208gr amaxs for longer range shots WHEN you start reloading and gain confidence. Will also leave you change for gas money to get yourself to the bush to put it to use.
Can't believe the" Buy Now" hasn't been taken, twist his arm for a free South Head fallow.
Not sure where you have got to Possummatti but if you are looking for a first rifle - that Savage .308 that Nick-D found would be a great place to start - looks like good value
So what would I know - like most in my era - I started with a .303 and drilled army ammo - OK - but I couldn’t hit shit with peep sights - so I got a Parker Hale 30.06 and a 4x scope - used drilled US army ammo - shot heaps of deer, chamois and tahr with that rifle and very cheap ammo
Meat hunting provided a lot of cash so I upgraded to a Brno .270 - shot heaps of deer, chamois and tahr with that rifle - still have it and love the hair trigger for longer shots - always used 130gr bullets
Started getting fallow about five years ago - so left the 270 at home and changed to a .243 - lovely rifle on fallow - others on here get heaps of reds with a .243 but maybe best in skilled hands
Two of my oldest hunting mates have used 7x57 and .308 respectively - neither have ever changed - the one with the .308 has shot more deer than you could dream of
Take a look at a good ballistics calculator - see below - select say 150gr bullets and see how they perform -
Winchester Ammunition
Although I have used a .270 for forty years - I would advise a young hunter to start with a .308 - plenty of bullet options - likely you will stay with it
Good luck
Hi there
Sorry i havnt replied lately been flat out. I had a good look at the savage and i admit it is nice and good price. I have also been offered a savage 110 .308 with a Simmons scope from a very generous man for a good price. Sleeping on it at the moment. I do understand that youngsters like myself shouldnt think they will start off with the latest flashest gear and start nailing the deer and goats straight away. I actully learnt how to shoot on a 60 year old rough as guts 12g but used it for 3 duck seasons and never failed me appart from the odd sore sholder, before treating myself to a 11-87 so i have no problem buying a olden goodie to learn on. As you can probably tell im dead keen to get into hunting on my own and so gratefull that everyone on this forum has treated me as one of them instead of a steriotipical 16 yr old ( eg. James sully) and gone out of there way to answer my questions and help me out. Just a group of genuine people sharing there passion. I cant thanks you guys enough for that
Cheers Joshua
If the price is right and it will put 5 shots into less than a inch and a half at 100ywith factory ammo your good to go to 300y .
Most probably if and when the time comes accuracy could be vastly improved by reloading.
or it may already be a tack driver, in which case buy it.

ok mate it would be hard to go wrong there.
Tell you what, if it looks good and you do buy it for that 650 without a reasonable scope.
I have a brand new weaver Grand slam 3x10x40 with the ballistic plex reticle still in the box for sale on her somewhere and haven't been bothered moving across to T.m
Quite happy to let a young forum member pay it off over a time and price per payment that suits both us.
Happy to send it to you for a look over and it you don't want it just send it back.
Hey mate. Don't rush in and buy your first rifle just on price. Also don't get too worried about getting it 100 percent right first time. If it turns out you like hunting, you'll buy and sell a few rifles over the next few years... Anything over .243 will cleanly kill deer, however with all calibres you need to hit the deer in the right place.
There are some great deals on trademe and we don't mind helping; if you see something you like, post on here and you'll get some good feedback. Just be carefull about believing everything you read on here. As you can see in this and other threads, either some guys have a weird sense of humor or they have no experience with the calibres they are writing about. Quite often calibres become fashionable and also some advice is based on long range shooting, you don't need to worry about that if you're just trying to shoot your first few deer.
Learning to hunt and get around the outdoors is more important than what calibre you have...
Let us know how you get on and good luck!
I think it is the way you present yourself. First and foremost is the way you write. No slang, bang or bullshit. Good spelling and punctuation.
You also seem to have a level head and open to suggestions (Not like a ADHD kid let loose in a lolly shop as JS was).
People quite enjoy helping out the likes of yourself where they can
Walking around with your hand out looking for what the world owes you is not a good character builder
I think your on the right track. All the best
