    Hunt the northern tararuas

Question guys I live very close to shannon
Generally do my hunting 2-3hrs drive away . And I'm keen to try up the tararuas access from the dams I've been up there a few times but just wondering which way to start head ect any tips would b appreciated . I have walked to burn hut but the weather was shit so we didn't do any hunting

    Hey mate

I have been up behind the top dam and up a side creek, I didn't see any deer but found plenty of sign, and it looked like a good habitat.
One of those ill came back but never made it back yet

I'd be careful leaving your car there, there is more smashed glass on the ground there than at a recycling center....

Hey mate, just eject yourself anywhere away from the dams and main trails and you’ll be golden

Me and the bro have been recovering decent meat out of there most weekends, not often do we go more than a couple of kms in.

But as someone’s already pointed out, best to get dropped off/picked up as the dam car parks are popular ground for the undesirables
    And tardy wanna be campers.

I’d make the effort to avoid hunting around anything that shows up on a map, as people frequent it as an exit point from the Ruas

Burn hutt and mangahao hutt would give you some excellent start points and are an easy enough walk to get an idea of the neighbour hood

Some good options up there for sure. Hunted it a few times when I lived in Shannon. Luckily no issues with vehicles for me but I don’t doubt the risk.

As Bob said have a look up Barra Stream. Also used to fly camp at the bottom of Harris Creek and walk up there. There’s some nice clearings and slips. Have shot them not far off the track on the way to Mangahao Flats Hut.

Also watch out for the dickbag who drives up and down mangahao road accusing people of poaching the forestry blocks because he thinks their car looks familiar.
