Hunting areas close to South Auckland

    Hey lads,

Relatively new to North island hunting areas. Is there anything worth checking out close to South Auckland (within 2-3 hours)? Im looking at heading to Pureora and camping out at Piropiro for a weekend in the near future. Will be round Waiouru way for month of November so will also have a walk around the Kaimanawas.

Is there anything in between that im missing that is worth a look?

    Cheers

There are more deer within an hour of Auckland cbd than any other part of nz I can think of.
Went for hunt last weekend. Saw 13 within 1/2 hour from truck.
Access is mostly impossible with most of it though but if you keep at it you can get a few handy spots for an easy evening hunt.

The kaimais has a crazy amount of people these days. Can’t go anywhere without some random popping up.
Piropiro flats sounds like it’s just as bad.

Man you need get out of Auckland more if you think seeing 13 deer after 1/2 hr from truck. On the roads I drive on I see mobs that size & bigger from the road driving to work with in 10-15 mins off town & a farm right on the town boundary got the chopper in & culled over 300 recently

Kaimais is closest for you. Access from the west is short but f'ing steep climb unless you drive over the saddle which has some good access points. The bush can be real thick and nasty but also has some great spots and clearings.

North pureora is your next option. Thick bush but not quite so nasty.

Would be happy to show you either sometime.

I am steering you in the right direction mate.
I live in south Auckland and used to drive to hunt deer, then a mate put me onto hunting locally and it’s heaps better.

Been over 20 years since I lived up that way but the hunuas were good for goats, pigs and the very odd escaped farmed deer. Onewhero, port Waikato area goats and deer, mostly private land hunting there though. Surely there are still pigs in the coromandel amongst other things

All good. I live in hunua.
Woodhills good for a day a year if you win a ballot. Ridiculous amount of deer there, all the way down to Muriwai.
Mate used to regularly tip over reds in some block of doc native behind kumeu. Never told me exactly how he was doing it before he died but I understand it was fairly legal.
Quite a few reds in riverhead but blocks around it are too small and full of horses and alpacas.
There’s reds around clevedon and hunua, but they’re too sporadic to really hunt just yet.
Used to be sizeable herds behind the quarries at hunua and drury but councils been hammering them as they move out towards ranges.

There’s a metric shitload of fallow all over the awhitu peninsula, right from waiuku.

Plenty of reds over river Te Kōhanga/ port Waikato.
Waiuku cops are hot on illegal hunting so don’t even consider it.
If you’re a half decent bloke and get out and meet a few people you’ll find doors start to open.
Use a suppressor to keep the horsey people happy, and don’t take any risks with houses etc (goes without saying but always good to keep it front of mind).

Certainly beats thrashing around in the kaimais lol.

P.S please note I haven’t told you where I catch my pigs or exactly where I shoot deer 🤣

    Awesome mate, appriciate the pointers!

I did hear of fallow along Awhitu when i picked up a set of tires in Tuakau, fella kept it pretty close to his chest which is understandable
