Hunting Canada Goose in Canterbury on small game permit

Anyone had experience hunting Canada Goose in Canterbury on a small game permit?
I heard Doc issues small game permits, but can't seem to apply online.

Would appreciate any pointers on the below:
    1. Do we call a Doc office instead of applying online? If yes which office? Hanmer Springs?
    2. Does Doc have a map layer showing the small game areas similar to the open hunting areas?
    3. What's a suitable caliber for geese? I have a 17HMR and a 22 Hornet that I suspect are more than adequate.
    4. If you take say a 22 Hornet on a small game permit, and encounter a deer, are you allowed to shoot it?

    Thanks!

Good luck! I tried and tried via Geraldine and then ChCh. The guy on the phone was hopeless. Gave up in the end and just hunt the riverbeds instead.

I've got them in the past (for rabbits/hares), emailed DoC asking about specific areas, then was put in touch with the right office. Rimfire/shotgun only from memory, I think 22 Hornet is specifically excluded.

Nothing to stop you using something bigger...rifle wise. Technically to shoot a goose on lake wainono I need a small game permit,to shoot duck I need waterfowl permit and gamebirds licence. The small game and waterfowl doc issued permits are just about the same..

Yeah I mis-read that. I think on my large game permit it might exclude 22 Hornet though... so you can shoot geese with it, but not deer? Sounds like you need a 222!

right doc permits a piece of piss . Go to info@doc.govt .nz email them with all your details and ask for canada goose permit(i do this for lake ellesmere .) problem with using a rifle is the distance a projectile travels .our crew -all shotgun using 32gm no2/3 shot or same in 2 3/4 ". thjis load will handle virtually anything .

To actually answer your original post:

    1. not currently via online. Email info@doc.govt.nz, tell them where you are wanting to hunt and they will send to appropriate office to respond. Varies depending on where. (Might be more productive than phoning)
    2. No, I don't believe so
    3. they "discourage" rifles but don't ban them - as per post from @kotuku, need to be aware of where shots might go, esp. in riverbeds could ricochet a long way... shotgun safer in this situation.
    4. You still need the normal hunting permit for the area you are in for large game, and to comply with it if shooting deer. Short answer, no, can't shoot deer with 22 Hornet (or shotgun, rimfire, etc) under normal permit rules.

I keep a permit going pretty much year-round.

If you are shooting at Ellesmere you'll only be able to take the shotgun...no rifles are allowed from what I've been told by the office.

Flick them an email like some of the other members have suggested and they will respond with what details they require before issuing the permit.

If you get stuck dm me and I'll share with you the email address I use

Apply for small game and open permit and take rifle to cover both,
