Would be interesting to see any trends over a few years, I don't at present but things like weather conditions, moon phase, hunting pressure in the area, month/week would all be good info.
I bloody struggle to write in my fishing diary......just an inbuilt hate of any kind of paperwork I think.
Yeah i feel ya. My first note is just date, weather leading up to and time shot. Pretty easy to jot a few words but whether i make a note again will be the test ha ha. Probably loose my note book or i'll open it and it will have scribbles of unicorns all through it :D
Well worth doing, got 4 years of info so far and is a great tool to get a feel for when certain areas click, not to mention recording some history for when your in the rocking chair.
Normally have the following info
Hunting party, date, area, weather conditions, animals seen/ animals shot
Then a brief account of the hunt etc.
Just don't let the wife see it
That sounds harder that using a pen Nibblet
Used to have one for a couple of years but ya gotta be pretty dedicated to it. Sometimes the last thing ya feel like doing at the end of a slog is get your diary out and fill it in. Especially if you forgot your bloody pen - lead tip bullets are a prick to write with....but if your dedicated to it they are pretty handy and cool to look back on
Don't do t myself but if you have a phone, you could record a quick message at the time or later at camp and write it up when you get home!?
I keep one. Have done for about 5 years. I record in a journal when including times, where and who with, what's shot, range and rifle and weather. Plus any other details of interest like bullet performance.
I also have hand drawn maps of my hunting spots and mark all of the kills with an X, rifle and range.
I wish I had started it 50 years ago.
Yeah i wrote some crap today after yesterdays hunt. Not keen to take it with me or try and do it when i get back first thing. It may make for good reading some day, one line so far states '170 yards using Brents head for a rest' :D he reckons next time im his bipod ;)
Just had a go at remembering the hunts ive been on in the last year and its damn hard, must try and remember to do it every now and then
Yup I keep a diary. In the very front on the year planner I write what and have a tally at the bottom of each month. Then on the corresponding day write what, who with and maybe distance and also where. Interesting reading back over the years. Have done this for last 4-5yrs

Here you go (with edits for obvious reasons).

I plot every deer or pig I shoot on google earth with calibre, range and month/year. It's neat looking over it later and also handy for sending to mates who want to know where the deer are (or were!).
I also photograph all the animals I shoot. It's a great wet weather activity, flicking through them...
It sounds like a good idea to me.
Jem.
@craigc epic idea. I use it to plot all of our passages from the last 3 years. Interesting to see where we have been.
Yip I've got quite a healthy google earth file going. Where, what when etc. Great tool for finding new spots too, some hold deer, some hold pain an misery :D
Have a lot on my rhino but sadly no deer on the ground moments yet after a year of hunting semi seriously. When I recover from my surgery and start getting back out there I think this might be something to get started. In the mean time I'm looking forward to heading down to my mates goat farm at the base of the Ruahines and knocking over some of the ugly venison he has on the borders.
Hey Gibo, I have kept a hunting/fishing/diving diary for the last 12 years. The following is the info I enter: Date, moon phase,location,observations,altitude/depth,weather,time, range to deer. Is real handy looking back over the same period for previous years. This means I can usually head straight to the "hotspots" and start glassing when hunting. Also good to have "local" knowledge on the deer which such a diary provides over time. Cheers
I keep one......call it the freezer
I take a black and white photocopy of the topo map on my hunts.
As well as plotting animals seen/shot, I'll note the position of any sign seen and how fresh it seems, and any nice clearings or broadleaf stands etc that I come across. I add notes re the weather and often too the wind direction at different times of the day. To help with navigation I jot down the times that I reach different landmarks.
that journel should be a book now @Tahr
I do on upland game birds, it has halved the time I spend on non productive spots, birds seen or heard, to birds shot. Keeps my tallys honest too :D
Yeah but it's easy to guesstimate. As opposed to saying you took maybe 20-30 pheasants this year you can have a look and say it was actually 19 shot and 40 misses :D
