    Hunting fails and misfires

It happens to the best of us, normally in threes.

    Fail number 1
In February I set up a game camera for the first time. The spot was a good one, plenty of sign, fresh tracks and a nice wallow, a spot I've seen, heard and shot deer. Strapped it to a tree, test triggered it and off we went. 3 weeks later, 3660 photos in the camera! "Holly shit" I thought! It was set to take 6 photos, 1 second apart each time it was triggered. I didn't realise the 6" tree would swing around in the wind so much, the flax bush in front of the camera would move so much in the wind and didn't think that as the sun setting and shining in the sensor would trigger it, but every day as the sun went down, a series of photos where take. Oh, and no deer, just a fantail in mid flight.

    Fail number 2
I work for a large international company that produces and supports GPS systems for earthmoving machines. The sort of thing that uses GPS to control the hydraulics on a bulldozer. I sometimes travel to various places around the world to help contractors get to understand using this technology for increase there productivity. Phone call for the boss in the States the other week went something like this:
Boss: one of the other (US based) guys cannot make it to Sweden and Finland in March, I need you to go.
    Me: when in march?
Boss: as soon as you can!
Me: I'm planning a couple of weeks off in March and April for the Roar.
Boss: that's nice, I didn't get a whitetail this year either, book your flights to Sweden!

Don't get me wrong, the work is good and the travel is ok, but the timing is shit! So I depart this coming Friday for two weeks. Planned on taking Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday off to go hunting instead. This leads me to Fail number 3

    Fail number 3
Antman arrives at my place in Darfield at 5:45am in the Saturday just been. We jump in ute and headed west. Just as I go to pull off the road into the carpark, another ute smashed into the back of us. We were down to about 20-30km/h, he said he was doing 110km/h, he did break before the impact. We were push forward, across the centerline and into the water table on the other side. Dropped it off at the panel beaters this morning, he told me to start looking on trademe for a new ute. So, not hunting today or tomorrow!

Nice straight stretch of road as well. What was his excuse for not stopping short of you?
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

I was going to hit the "like" button as I really feel sorry for you ... I think the forum needs an "unlike" button for stories like this. Tuff luck fella. Is there any good shooting in Sweden? Must be something worth hunting there?

Fly to Germany, there for two days, drive the the Netherlands, there 1 day, train to Denmark, 2 days, fly yo Stockholm, 1 day, drive to Oslo, 1 day, fly to Finland, for 1 day, back to Stockholm for 1 day and then fly home.

Every airport and hotel in the world is pretty much the same.

    I've got one

Anyone familiar with the Lee Enfield will know that the bolt goes in and clicks onto a rail. Now pardon my ignorance as to the right names of things but the bit that clicks onto the rail only lets the bolt close properly if it is screwed in the correct number of times.

Basically it will look like it is a functioning rifle but won't do the business. Now a couple of roars back me and my mate draw a block in the water catchment area behind Wainuiomata that is one long ridge that leads up to a deer farm. My 308 was out of action for some reason so I grab the open sight 303 and away we go.
Good sign all the way up and we break for lunch at the top on the wee strip of grass up against the deer farm fence. Sitting there with no warning a 12-pointer pops the front half of its body out and roars right at us. Twice. This thing was about two farkin carlengths away and I'm sitting there struggling with my bolt and wondering why the fuck I can't chamber a round.

Longest 5 seconds of my life.

I had a problem trying to get the bolt into my rifle. Would have spent a couple of minutes fluffing about turning he bolt face, lining everything up, gently slide it in so nothing gets out of line, ... no go, slide it out check it again, repeat the process, ... scratch the head some more. Finally look at the other end of the bolt abd the bloody handle is on the wrong way round, ... Yes for some reason @TimeRiders left hand bolt doesn't fit my right handed rifle.

Good thing is I did it quietly and I don't think @MattyP noticed me do the old switcheroo and grab the RIGHT one from the bag.
