Hi guys
Im really keen to get into fiordland and do a hunting and fishing tour, mainly tending toward the hunting. but with a little bit of free diving and fishing on the side
Looking at the tour operators the options iv found are the likes of the Tapuku tours (Takapu Charters)
and similar,
Im keen to hear from what people who have done it think and what they reckin I should do
I too would be interested in any info on this. Cost wise what would a week set you back?
Depending on how many you want to travel with , and you level of comfort you enjoy . You could considder fly in on to the tops and fly camp for maybe a little less than boat charter . Potentually Be better hunting BUT SHITE ! If weather bad . Call me a soft cock but I'd need a lot of encouragement to snorkel off the coast , don't no what it be like in fiords with the fresh water on top of sea separation , from the top it looks black as a black thing down there ? . Hope does not sound negative , just trying to spark debate or input for you . I hade 14 days hunting / fishing from a wee dingy and fly camping once over the roar . Was primo hunting , but fishing was lackluster . I myself would like a charter trip , but mainly for tuna fishing .
I have a cobber that just got back from a trip. They had a ball. Was $2100 each for a week out of Dusky. They went everywhere. Even seen a few moose cams:thumbsup:

I went down last April cost a couple of grand but would not hesitate to do it all over again.
We were on board the Jewel from Doubtful sound and spent 5 days working our way around Doubtful, Breaksea and Dusky sound. We lived life pretty dam well on board, with amazing crew and great food, Rob the skipper dropped us into some awesome dive sites including a wreck in Dusky sound, unfortunately for me the trip was primarily diving and I only spent a few hours on the land but would have loved to spend more time.
There is a report on here but went to post the link and realised I have shuffled all my photo bucket accounts around and now the links no longer work :XD: if you were interested could send you through a few photos or could post them on here again...
Went in May/June on the Seafinn. Pretty new boat and the skipper, Chris, was great and if you want and is a keen hunter too. 11 of us went at $2000 each.
Saw alot of deer and the diving and fishing was great. Hard to expain what it's like down there, photos and video dont show it.
Is their the opporutunity to skipper your own boat?
An option ? if you can get it over willmont pass( private road) into deep cove . We got a kayak firm to take all our gear inflatable motor etc across lake then over pass $75 ech way . Some one will no the deal as I'm pretty sure you could get a boat towed over , either on there trailer or launch your own boat with trailer tied underneath your boat , be a slow trip though .Quote:

I have trip booked end of march 2014 just before the roar for 4 days for my brothers Stag do (he doesn't know yet :thumbsup: ). Going with deep cove charters- think that is the Seafinn boat and just in doubtful sound. Costing around the $1700 mark per head for 12 of us includes food but not booze. I think we were quite lucky to get a booking for that time- might pay to check availability early, the roar booked in advance for couple years... Will let you know how we get on!

im looking at a trip in november, looks like a boat based trip will cost a bit much, so heli in to a hut
costs are looking to be roughly 1200 in travel, flights, bus and heli.
now to find someone who wont drive me nuts living in a cabin with for 7-10 days

The way we got there was by being dropped off at called Hauroko got a Pre arranged "water taxi" to the far end and helicoptered over to Dusky sound and landed on the roof of the boat.

Yep, I did the Takapu trip a few years ago, and it was an awesome trip. Most of the guys were into fishing, so hunting time was limited. Not sure if Mark (Ballbag) is still skipper, but he is a "no frills" guy who can get you into some neat places. Same as twoshot - some flew direct from Tuatapere, and rest of the group went up lake Hauroko, then chopper to Chalky Inlet. Takapu cruised Chalky and Preservation. Fishing and diving was amazing. Cost was nil (Boss paid!!) Shit I miss that job.Quote:

I spend a bit of time out there, I run a 3.8 meter smart wave and me mates got a 3.8 wave break we either go out of milford sound,or around the south coast travel super light and pick the weather.the spear fishing is awesome as is the hunting if you like big crays and clear water that is what we chase!! and of course the odd deer or two.
You are definetly in the elements and it is not for the faint hearted but it is pure hunting and diving freedom. Only take 2 people per boat and light weight is the key so spear gear one rifle and one set of dry gear. Drop us a line if keen....
