Was looking for a bit of Intel re deer numbers in the area and if it worth the mission from North Island
Also after some advise on the better areas in lake sumner to explore

Ring Simon lawn at heli ahaura and fly in. Good numbers of reds and some cham aswell

There's tonnes of deer there. It's overrun if you fly in try shoot some Hinds for meat. You couldn't put a dent in it solo of you tried.Quote:

North facing slopes they won't be moving much and will be out longer than you would think.

Alright, stop the messages lads. If you’re having a hard time in there it’s because you’re following the main walking tracks. Take a Friday off. Walk in on Thursday night and out on Sunday. You’ll have plenty of time to see animals. You can't miss them in the RHA. As has been said, its over run. Will see 50 to 100 for a weekend trip without too much trouble. Just gain some height, find a decent vantage point and start looking.

Yea I assume it’s because everyone thinks they need to head up behind the lake to get animals. I had a walk in on last light many years ago and mistimed my walk so decided to cross the river and cut up that ridge. Haven’t regretted it sinceQuote:

Its no secret that there are plenty of deer in there and as mentioned above "you couldn't make a dent in them solo if you tried"
Probably won't see them at the hut but if your prepared to do the vert then have at it !!

There used to be a swing bridge across to the Dozy back when you had separate blocks in the area

I'd maybe argue that anyone that needs this info to find deer in the current climate should focus less on the spot and more on being a better hunter. Its genuinely hard not to find deer if you are willing to climb a hill and don't hang around huts or tracks.
Personally I don't have a problem with general areas being given but I get more dubious as we start posting exact locations on a topo.
