    Hunting at Long Gully (Molesworth)

Hello there, am pretty new hunter. Me and my mate are heading towards Molesworth, hunting the Long Gully block . We manage to get the booking for a week through Doc. We have never been there, so just wondering if any one has hunt on that block , any recommendations, pointers or guidance would be helpful. Cheers

As you’re walking upstream in the Ribble, about halfway up on your left (true right) there is a major tributary. Worth a look up there as a bit of cover up there for deer to shelter and usually some good tucker as well. Nice sunny sheltered faces. Usually animals up there but does get poached a bit by Ch-Ch visitors and the odd local, at least that’s what happened fairly recently. Also borders open hunting area which maybe doesn’t help. Still can be productive. Up towards Hossack boundary can be quite productive, there’s a few fallow in the area as well. Guys that were on Hossack last weekend saw plenty of animals, some towards Molesworth land so you could be ok. Good luck.

Hi Padam welcome to the forum.

My advise would be gain some height and let the binos do the work its big country but there are animals there and if you look hard enough you will see them.

Plenty of pigs about and fyi they are very tasty

1100-1200 metre alt. mark they seem to like to hang out. Once you’re in area look to see where the inversion layer is at. This is where the warm air at. Warm is good at this time of year, where would you prefer to hang out. The deer will move lower to feed though.

Haven't hunted that block but have hunted the next one over across the river, big climbs so you need to be prepared for that and it will be cold.

Yep it can get cold there. A number of years ago we were tent camped by Hossack river mouth on Labour weekend I think it was. Cold weather came through. It got to -18C at Molesworth homestead and even dishwashing liquid froze in a couple of station huts. Breath froze on inside of sleeping bag. Thankfully we all had good gear. Exhilarating incentive to get moving in the daylight. Never know when it can freeze up there.

Could easily be colder than -5 up there. Take plenty of warm gear and a hot water bottle

I had a 20l water Jerry freeze solid overnight in Molesworth last year in July or August. As soon as the sun dropped below the horizon it was -8. The Clarence was semi-solid right across. It certainly gets a bit chilly

You'd have been hunting, you mean. That's the exercise - go somewhere and try find a deer

@Padam. Don’t know when exactly you’re going in for your hunt but she’s a bit wet in there at present. Clarence is up 1.47m at Jollies Pass river gauge so the Ribble and other creeks will be up too, side creeks drop reasonably quick after rain stops but won’t be the most pleasant in there.
