Jacket advice for a Canadian

Kia Ora from BC boys and girls. Need some advice, I'm from Vancouver and live up here still but I lived in NZ for about a year quite a while ago and I loved the longer swanni/Swazi jackets. I currently have an older Swazi tahr with the gore tex membrane. Needing to replace the old battler soonish and have been looking at new ones online. I came across the stoney Creek tarn alpine in my research and it looks pretty good, i particularly like that it has put zips. Wondering what people's experiences have been like with it compared to the Swazi good, bad, in between. Also how does it compare in length, I really like the length of my Swazi, and are they sized relatively the same? I run an xl for the Swazi. Chur in advance.

i have the stoney creek tarn alpine, good length, comparable to the swazi. Swazi is a bigger jacket overall probably, both certainly not in the lightweight category. I like the tarn alpine

Now you've done it. How does the hunters element elite jacket compare to the other two? I have a Swazi tahr now and it's manageable weight wise. These other two heavier/lighter/same? I do mountain hunts for goats/elk/sheep and have packed the Swazi around. Any websites I can get a good look at the hunters element and see a price for it?

The Elite is made from the same fabric that the top model of breathable waders are made from (riverworks and hunters element are the same company). So the fabric is designed to maintain breathability even when completely submerged and also tough enough to withstand falls onto rocks. It's epic.

Long drop like you mentioned you like, highest quality YKK zippers. I would have one of they came in XXS.

Maybe email your fav NZ retailer for price. From memory it's upwards of $499NZD

If i were you I would be getting either Sitka or Kuiu depending what you can find on special / clearance

They are a bit short on length though

wouldnt go stoney creeky, heard bad reports on their gear. Will never go back to hunters element, shocking product. broken zippers etc.

If I were you I'd either go Swazi or Kuiu. I have a mix of both and am stoked.

Email HE about it, their designers are actual kiwi hunters. Alex is excellent and has the power to change things.

Only broken zippers I have ever experienced were on older models that did not have the highest quality YKK and even those were just side vent pockets on trousers.

Every hunters element jacket that i have seen out actually being used in the Ruahines/Kawekas has a broken zip

Stoney creek will be slightly lighter and slightly more pack able but both big jackets. The stoney creek glaisnock is much lighter and compact but feels thinner obviously.

I would buy kuiu but as you say the length just isn't there on the rain jackets.

Hunters element is or has been a very average product. They may have changed now? Won't be getting another chance from me

Thanks guys, this has been great. I don't mind the extra weight of the Swazi tahr or a stoney Creek tarn as it'll eliminate having to carry a soft shell layer.

I've just come back from 4 months in a hunting camp in BC and my swazi tahr anorak was my go to because of the bush, the rain, for riding, and because it is so bloody dependable due to very few zips etc. It has a good long tail to go down over the saddle when you are riding. For this year I am hoping to get swazi to make me a custom tahr anorak out of the same fabric they make "One Tough Muttha" from, cos you dont need quiet fabric for where I will be hunting, but you do need tough for all the shit and scrub you have to ride through. And I'm hoping to have a large covered gusset in each side seam to make it work better when riding. If you need something bought over I will be over at the end of June.

Thanks bro, can't tell you guys how awesome the response has been. Sounds like Swazi is worth the extra coin, I also found a mom and pop stitch house that specializes in outdoor gear that'll do ykk waterproof pit zips for $18 a side.

So I had emailed stoney Creek before posting this thread, they got back to me and said that the tarn jacket is getting replaced by a new jacket called the "tundra". Supposedly an improved version with some new features and it comes out in March. It'll be interested to see how it looks.
