    Jap hunt - January

I am leaving for Australia on Monday for 10-12 weeks when I get back I want to go out and try and get a bit of venison for the freezer sort of looking to go around the 18th of January. My plan is to go to either the Oamaru Doc hut or Boyd hut also looking at getting choppered in and out if anyone is keen to go you would need to be willing to share expenses of the flight, I will be on a mission to try and get my first deer even though I have been trying for the last three or four years so would like it if an experienced person came along as I am still learning the ropes of deer hunting due to lack of opportunities to get out due to financial issues getting in the way over the earlier years. Would like to start planning early so this trip can be a bit more organised. Would like to be in the bush for at least 3-4 days to increase chances.

I went to Boyd few years back Would never go back there The hut never got any sun freezing hole Steep track to hut got sick of that as did the others No deer and I was with some pretty good hunters who said oops we came to the wrong place Went to Oamuru public 1 year ago Couple of Taupo locals spot lighted all night ang got some 35 People went thru the hut while we were there
four nights Great holiday no deer Would not go back unless you're gonna move out into the bush away from the track and people smells Do you know it's only my opinion but if paying for flights I only go to private blocks It just takes the maybe 20 other hut visitors out of the game which to me means getting the best chance of hunting without worrying about other too much

Why not have a talk to the boys at Ngamatea? If you're thinking of flying in somewhere the price will be similar, if you can't shoot a Sika at Ngamatea save a round for under your chin after the weekend! :-)
It's free range, stunnning country, theres plenty to shoot and if they don't put you on a deer you don't pay anyway.

Mistral, the fees for Ngamatea are $750 per day and $200 for every meat animal shot.
There is some stunning scenery there.

Mate Im keen to fly in late Jan. Your dates work well. I would go to another private block abit further and get a third to split the cost tho... I have been there before and it is great. If you are interested then flick me a PM. I wouldnt go Oamaru/Boyd as its a busy place and gets plenty of pressure. If you are coming back to secure your first deer I would spend the money to put yourself with a good chance of seeing better numbers with the amount of time and cost you are spending to come back but if you are set on your plans go for it there are deer there. Good luck mate.

You don't sound a very happy chappy, Happy.
You just need to walk a bit further at Boyds to get away from the nongs. Cross the river (it involves getting your feet wet) and head up pretty much anywhere.
As for the track being too steep to the hut...well...I'm speechless on that one. A lot of private huts have steeper approaches to them than Boyds. Its just all part of the experience.
Oamaru public is really a hot spot for Sika. Lots of private land acting as a feeder. Once again, all you really have to do is get off your arse.

Thanks for that Im actually Happy as bro. Dont worry we crossed the river alright. No one was sitting on their arse at all. Boots were wet the whole time there evryone was jostling for space close to the fire to attempt to dry them.We were out in the dark and back in the dark. And off the track I might add way up as well as at the bottom of it all. We even did an overnight walk up river to. At the hut never heard a bird or anything whole time we were there. As I said I was the junior on this with guys who have been hunting 30 years or longer and their comments were oops we have come to the wrong place... Side note whilst there a guy flew himself in covered his plane up and headed away for two days sleeping out. Came back and said he doubted he d bother doing that again . So whatever thats my experience of the place as well as seeing animals harvested at Oamaru by spotlight two per night but none during day light hours too many people and thats not my cuppa.
