Anyone remember the similar suggestion a couple of decades ago? At the public meeting to discuss proposed treatment of the Kaimais, the audience was very pointeD in their non acceptance of DOCs suggestion. I wonder if there will be another ‘consultation’ this time round?

Unfortunately there's a good chance that the Greens will be back in government.
Labor are well ahead in the polls but I can't see them getting an outright majority.
Enter the Greens. They usually scratch up 5 percent on the party vote.

Well if that’s the case then get onto the Tauranga office and start making some relationships count. Those fellows will be in charge of the contracts. Ask for a meeting with a senior ranger. Get the dialogue going. see if they are willing to share any of the evidence. Before you say I am barking mad I know a few senior rangers in various districts around the North Island and I’ve never had anything but a good yarn with them. I do however caution against sitting in front of a young potentially overpromoted type and I’ll leave the rest of what to avoid up to you to work out. If there is genuinely a counter argument against what DOC is proposing then the only way to get that argument on the table is to do it properly, So if you’re in there every weekend then take photos and be ready to promote your side of the argument.

Get onto the local MP and find out if they’re interested in asking questions.

Not looking to put anyone’s nose out of joint, but the whingeing on here about ungulate control needs to be put in the context of what is real, what is imagined, and what to do if there genuinely is a reason to go into battle. A lot of the comments we’ve had on other recent threads about the central North Island deer numbers have been well wide of the mark, makes me think that hunters are getting lazy. Which believe me and my beer gut is what happens when there are too many animals.

I never found browsing an issue with the Kaimais though i would say over ten years deer numbers have certainly increased to a healthier population.

You also have goat shooters go through the Kaimais every few years.

If Sage was serious about predator control she wouldn't just keep going on about rats, stoats and possums as she should also be targeting cats and that includes domestic cats which would upset plenty of people as it did when Gareth Morgan pushed for that a few years back.

20+ years back there was the idea of having a massive fence right across the Coromandel but that never eventuated.

The only way to EVER have a predator free environment is to create reserves like Mt Maungatautari!

Someone will continue the work... You will need a huge change in Politics to stop this sort of thing now.

The bush can look a bit haggard in places. Worst spot I ever found was ngamuwahine loop track in summer. Looked like a huge mob of goats had gone through and eaten everything.

But with the amount of hunting pressure the kaimai Mamaku park gets I'm not sure how hunters can shoot more deer.

There's a few voiciferous manic twig and tweeters in that region who've been pushing this agenda for years. Sage's followers. There was a consultative group set up a few years ago. A past president of Tga deerstalkers got into that so I suggest somebody close to that branch have a yarn with them.
