Mate shot this in the weekend. Must have bent his antler while it was soft. It had hardened and was imprinted into the cheek.
He was in good nick so could still eat but the eye had suffered and didnt look great. That antler is nearly imbedded into that cheek.
Wee bit more growth and poor bugger would have been in trouble big time. Shame quite good head otherwise in a few more years.

Looks like he had broken the stem beneath the coronet. I am surprised that the velvet was not rotting as that would have impacted the blood supply (which it looks to have done by the shorter growth). Your mate did this animal a favour Happy.

Pretty weird the types of antlers people come across.

Almost looks as though the pedicle is deformed but could be broken, youd have to take a look in there. My brother shot a stag last year who had one decent side and one side that was deformed, he'd smashed his skull it turned out and it'd healed but fucked up antler growth.
They still pass on good genes if they're good heads though - broken pedicles aren't genetic!! hah

Quite common for that to happen in the Kaimai's seen several similar examples over the years. When you look at the country they live in it's easy to see why

seen a few like that , the stags that get any size on them get cort up in the sipplejack and die , , shes thick in there
