Thread: Kaimais

Hey guys,

Going to try some new country in a few weekends time in the Kaimais. Going to be staying in the Waitawheta Hut for just the one night so am limited to time and how far I can go. Any pointers on where the animals tend to be during the day and evenings? Many clearings around or is it mostly bush entangled with supple jack I hear so much about.

Cheers for any info you are willing to share. P.S. If you have hunted this area a bit before, and if you PM me Ill tell you exactly what one of my plans are and if you think its a waste of time then at least I know where I stand.

Waitawheta will too far Nth in the Kaimai's better to try area's further south from Cashmores clearing down

Cheers Bonecrusher. The walk sounds a bit harder in winter from what I read to Cashmores clearing, and the Te Rereatukahia Hut would then be my best option hiking in along the Tuahu track?

I'll take to it Twoshotkill and make a new track for us hunters. Re-assessing my options now as the Tuahu track is 5 hrs to the hut, im young and dumb with not much time to spare, but not that dumb!

As others have said, the deer numbers are low at that end of the Kaimais...in from Tuahu Track and south would be my best bet. Still animals being seen around Thompsons Track. If you want a roof over your head, I could put you up in the bus just off Thompsons Track...and security for your vehicle.

That is a very kind offer Spook. The bus I imagine is just that, a bus? I'll PM you once I have finished exploring my options as I need to read up more on the area.

My intentions were to hunt just northeast of Waitawheta hut over that flat bit as seen on topo maps (~590m elevation) and drop back onto the track travelling west. Whats peoples thoughts on this, obviously a waste of time as suggested by Bonecrusher?

I can't help you with information on the area you want to hunt as I have never been there...the main reason being I don't think there are many animals there...my son did some work on the hut and tracks over there some years ago and seen no sign at all. I have an old hunting mate living over that way and in the last 20 years has only heard of a couple of animals showing themselves. Of course there could be shitloads now as it gets little hunting pressure.

Shit, looks like the best feature on your map is just east of the hut by a km right by the 795 high point, that's where I'd be looking - and she wants to be your friend too.

Do you know how long the walk is BC?

Its about 3 hours in from the Matamata side Rusky. You climb straight up the Te Tuhi Track for around an hour then its relatively flat to the hut from there.
