Thread: Kaimanawa Reccy

Went for a wander in the Kaimanawas in the weekend having a snoop into some new country , great weather , although I think my sleeping mat was not up to the damp cold ground (friggin freezing)
Sika kicked my butt , they are in the tight pepperwood gullies up quite high where they can catch the sun and keep warm still , wind was light but fickle and in the end buggered me on a couple on Saturday avo and Sunday I had the same result on another ...never saw any of them .
Still it was a great weekend in the hills .

Frustrating animals to hunt, I was there a few weeks ago, Waipakihi river. They seem to be around 1200/1400metres.

Got close to 3, wasn't quick enough to get shot off.

Man that’s high..

Are they generally always higher than reds?

Sounds like Sika being Sika, they sure love those warm spots when the weather is cold.

They are such cool animals to hunt being so curious and vocal.

There awesome alright , when your in close and stuff it up and they start barking it’s frustrating but very cool at the same time

Great to hunt, used to find after a couple of months bush hunting them and then returning to hunt reds, the reds were so easy.

We used to possum the Waipakihi and struck a lot of deer on the flats midwinter,often looking as freezing as we were,a few times I couldnt pull the hammer back on my Marlin 30-30 without using whole hand or wrist as to frozen!,also anywhere after fresh snow has broken branches down is always good.

It gets brutally cold in the Waipakihi, coldest I have ever seen it in NZ
