Thread: Kaweka and Ruahines....

Anybody got any intel on the status of the ranges?

Kaweka's has obvious road access issues - does anybody know about Ruahine access roads?

My friend tried to go to deerford loop track a week or 2 ago and the road was shut he also tried another road to a access point that was also shut . Not sure if they still are but may be worth ringing farmers to find out before trying to go anywhere

I saw something recently that said both closed, along with the Kaimanawas.
IIRC, Kaimanawas was a washout on Clements Mill road they hope to fix in the next week. Ruahines was access roads closed, Leon Konvig hut washed off it's piles and unconfirmed reports of Daphne hut being in a similar state.

I don't know the original source, but it sounds like it's official.

Our thoughts are with the communities in Northland, Auckland, Hawkes Bay and the East Cape following the recent Auckland Anniversary weekend floods and Cyclone Gabrielle. We appreciate the outdoors community will be keen to get back into the ngahere, but we ask that you respect the current State of Emergency and DOC closures to allow DOC to complete their initial inspections of the conservation estate. There are significant additional hazards that will be present, such as huts that are damaged or missing, excessive windfall, slips and sewerage on site where rivers have gone through long drop toilets. We would hate to see emergency services dragged away from helping people in the areas most affected because of overdue or lost adventurers. So please, be patient. An update on the areas affected:
▪️ Coromandel: All facilities are closed and will be reopened as DOC clears them. In particular, Cathedral Cove is incredibly unstable right now.
▪️ Waikato and Kaimai Area: All facilities are closed. Some frontcountry tracks, such as Wairere Falls and the Great Lakes Trail, have been reopened as they get inspected. Please check the DOC website.
▪️ Whirinaki Forest Park: Is currently affected by windfall and is closed.
Gisborne and East Cape area: All facilities are closed and currently inaccessible by road.
▪️ Waioeka and Urutawa: All facilities are closed and will be reopened as DOC clears them. DOC completed frontcountry assessments this week, so check the DOC website for updates.
▪️ Te Urewera: The Waikaremoana Great Walk is currently closed. Communities around Te Urewera have been significantly impacted by flooding and ask that manuhiri postpone any planned trips to Te Urewera until they have had a chance to clean up. ▪️ Kaimanawa Forest Park: Is currently closed. There is an impassable washout on Clements Mill Road which DOC expect to have fixed by roading contractors next week (weather-dependant). Work is planned to start in the next couple of weeks on clearing Te Iringa and Hinemaia tracks.
▪️ Kaweka Forest Park: Is currently inaccessible and closed. There is significant damage to the roads leading to the Kaweka forest park and we are expecting it to be some time until access is reinstated. Checks by helicopter will be completed in due course, but please respect the fact that the people that work in this area have homes, whānau and friends affected by the situation.
▪️ Ruahine Forest Park: Is mostly inaccessible and closed. No Mans Road has sustained significant damage, and roads leading to the area have been closed due to slips, wash outs and undermining. DOC have completed some initial checks on areas they can access. Leon Kinvig Hut has been washed off its piles and moved 5m downstream. There are also unconfirmed reports that Daphne Hut has sustained similar damage.
▪️ Tararua Forest Park: Is unaffected, but still has a number of alerts in place from previous weather events. Please check alerts on the DOC website before venturing out.
▪️ Tongariro National Park: Is unaffected, but please check for current alerts on DOC website.
Areas, tracks and huts will be opened on a case-by-case basis as the local DOC teams assess them. Extra resources have been deployed from other areas of the country to assist in affected areas. Please check the DOC website for alerts before you head out into the ngahere on the North Island.
Be patient and stay safe. We'll do our best to keep you all updated.

Surprising that DOC haven’t sent out a bulletin to the email addresses we use for our permits…

It sounds like the Kawekas are now open for hunting but actually getting to them by road is the main issue
