I've seen and shot a few Sika and Red spikers' that haven't gone into the velvet, and some the other way that have still been in the velvet as late as April. Maybe late fawns or a nutrition issue. But its not too uncommon.

Maybe no deer, but beautiful children none the less.

Try three! Its like they can't breath without words coming out, and it all makes sense, (to them at least). Plus, the world would fly off its axis if one said something the other agreed with.

Awesome, any trail cams on the makahu -Kaweka flats track a month or so back would have some video of a skipping 7 yr old boy and maybe some still shots of father and son holding hands.

    Poor deer have No chance

    Kaweka Sika

Neat morning for covering ground, not too hot

The deers food supplies are growing well with this last rain and now some heat

The cloud leaves and up goes the temp

Caught up with the young hunter and am up on a ridge cooling off and its a stunning day

Waiting for stags, anything with wonky antlers or no potential or just plain silly gets Amax'd.

Super nice without that wind that arrived last week

On the plus side when I took my own chatter box daughter out last year when she actually did stop we spotted and shot 2 reds. Then the talking really started.

@7mmsaum is the 7mm R.E.M. Mag Carbonlite your gun of choice now?
    How do you find them?

Both Magnum chambering's in the Carbonlite range are everything that you would want in a lightweight, without the disadvantages.

They are heavy enough to hold steady for the ultra long shots, with enough heft to use without a brake, which rules out the negatives of a brake.

They are light enough to carry anywhere that you would want to go, a great balance of form/fit/weight.

My gun of choice now ?

Well, that depends on where I'm off to

If hunting around tighter areas, mountain creek gullies etc and under 500yrd stuff with little wind expected then I'm happy to use a light 7mm08, the 140BT@2930fps holds great energy to around 630ish yards and is reliable

    7mm08

    I

A 308 with the 150g NBT at 2900fps serves the same purpose in the same areas with the same low wind conditions and holds its energy to around 650yrds

    308

I choose the 7mm Rem mag/Saum for bigger flatter country or areas with longer shots being the norm, and say on those days where some breeze is expected and shots range from 200-1000yrds, perhaps 1100yrds if zero breeze -with good energy and velocity at that distance.

Both these push the 162 amax @3080fps

    This Saum pushes a 162 @3050fps (3080 in 26 inch tube)

In areas where the longest shots are needed and/or 10mph + wind is expected the 338 Lapua 300g EH @2850fps gets taken.

It holds excellent energy out to 1875yrds.

So as you can see it's horses for courses really.
I try my best to not wound an animal and feel that choosing projectiles with proven terminal performance and using them within the old 1000ft lb of energy level works for me.

I'm aware of most projectiles velocity/energy performances past that point but voluntarily draw a rough line in the sand at that 1000ftlb mark.

Most times the hunting at shorter ranges happens very quickly and can be difficult to photograph, so not much of a record of it here, and the longest shots are demanding in other aspects so again not many pics get taken and shown here, which can leave the impression that the Rem mags get all the work, but all the horses get used for all the courses.
