Keen beginner hunter looking for someone to show me the ropes

    Kia ora everyone,
This is a bit of a long shot, but I thought I’d give it a shot.

I’m 16, live in Christchurch, and I’m really keen to get into hunting. I don’t have my firearms license yet and don’t own a gun, but I’m keen to learn things properly — safety, ethics, and doing it the right way. I spend a fair bit of time outdoors, I’m fit, respectful, and happy to listen and help out where I can. I don’t mind what we hunt, I just want to get out and learn.

I don’t want to sound ungrateful at all, but I’m also keen to learn how to tan hides, so I was wondering if it might be alright to keep a hide or two to practice with. Totally understand if that’s not possible.

If anyone around the Christchurch area would be keen to take a beginner out under supervision, even just for a day to learn and tag along, I’d really appreciate it. All good if not — just thought I’d ask.

    Cheers,
    George

If you can get down this far I would HAPPILY take you out for hunts, plenty of time over winter to do it,rest of year my shift work roster can be problematic. If you have transport ,well things get much easier. And I really like your manners thus far.your nan would be proud.

Thanks heaps, that would be awesome. I could definitely get down to Geraldine. I can give you my phone number so we can stay in touch if that suits you.

I'm sure you will able to send PM's soon enough. Get out for a few walks so hills won't bother you in mean time. Eat far too much food over Christmas and we will see what can jack up in new year.... Stocky is closer so might work out better too.will keep eye on this thread and look forward to seeing how you get on.

I will be getting back on January 1st. Does the private messages only work after a while of being friends on here?

From what I've seen, the "friends" bit doesn't do squat.... The PM's come enabled after you've been member long enough and posted enough that the moderation team believe your not just a spammer etc.

What MD said, just keep posting like you are.....all of a sudden one day you'll see that the PM function is working for you, same with Buy Sell.
With the amount of posts you currently have I would think your nearly there tbh.

The usual advice of joining NZDA and doing their HUNTS training course, you'd find it valuable I think: https://www.deerstalkers.org.nz/what...nts-programme/

North Otago branch of NZDA run a free 2 day hunt in March every year for new hunters to get their first deer, spend a couple of nights in huts, get some direct experience on private land with experienced hunters. Applications close soon so message me if interested?

@george_coote I'd be happy to take you out late autumn-winter next year, I'm away down southland/catlins for a few months then back in Canterbury. You're welcome to shoot me a PM in May. But looks like you'll get a few offers before then. Cheers!

Join the North Canterbury NZDA. Do the HUNTS course and come to the meetings (last Monday of a month). Next one is in February. Hunts course for 2025 is completed so will need to be in 2026.
