Kokomoka / Waipunga hunt permit blocks

I'm looking for any recent experience of these two blocks that lie to the north of SH5, accessed from Pohokura Road (Nth) just to th north of Waipunga Falls. Anyone know this area? If so, get in touch please.

All the blurb on Google searches about gates on Pohokura Road erected by Timberlands, and then removed by DOC, is 6-7 years old now. Since then, not a mention.

Does anyone know who Dbarraclough is from the FishnHunt forum?

    Thanks.

Pohukura road has been "Gated off" some years ago by the "Owners", even though it is a public road----they don't want anyone in there disturbing their "Horticultural operations"!!!?
The old Waipunga south road was accessible from the old main road, but I think the bridge over the Waipunga isn't useable now.
Someone else may have better knowledge as I haven't ventured in there for a long time. Vehicle security was always a problem. Good place for pigs when the Wineberry was fruiting, always deer there but not easy hunting. The big snow a few years ago flattened the scrub to an impossible extent!

There is a bridge accross the waipunga that you can drive accross. This road is good for access into Southern Whirinaki. Not sure about pohukura road but there is a gated road just after the bridge from memory. May that is it. There is also a hunting block on the other side of the road that is owned by the same iwi i think.

As far as I know the road from Napier highway t/o right throughto Minginui is public and open 24/7, or should be. It parallels the Waipunga stream almost to Matea / Kaingaroa boundary tgen jouns onto South rd to continue Nth. Access to Te Hoe and Upper Whirinaki hut tracks and Matukahia stm also from this road. DoC permit.I havnt been in there for several months though.

Yep both correct. I’m in there most weekends, be careful of staples (tyres) this time of year.

    Thanks fellas.

As far as I know the branch of Pohokura Road that runs north towards Minginui / Murupara is now un-gated, the gates were removed several years ago. The one that is problematic is Pohokura Road heading SW, parallel to the highway, that eventually rejoins the highway.

Doesn't sound like its that flash in terms of security, not a place to go leaving a ute with a couple of Engels humming away in the back? Even for a short-ish walk?

Pohukura is really dodgy. Go Nth and you be more secure.
